I wish you has been more particular in posting this thread under the right category.:) You see time is of immense importance but also being meticulous is also important when you are self employed.

Secondly why everything has to be targeted to desis. I know you are concerned about time and appointments. So the discussion could have have opened with a general opinion on why one needs to keep appts and what can be done? May be you have had a few bad experiences but let me tell you I have had bad experiences with all sorts - desis and non -desis.

I was wondering if anyone, self employed, to be more specific... feels that our desis are very bad in keeping their appointments?

I guess if we start this thread we will be able to understand why people do that and what can be done to avoid this?

In the business world it is upto the needy to keep appointment. No matter if I am on buying side or selling side, it is the needy that has to bend. Sometime there are people who force appointment on you. Those appointments are on the bottom of priority list. If something important pops up, it is the least priority work that gets knocked off. It is a rare occurance but it does happen. You like it or not, that is the way business world moves. It is difficult to explain the situation however sometime it is very difficult to keep all the appointment that are made. If somebody is not living up for the appointment and do not call back to cancel, it is a message for you. They do not need your service. In that case why do you want to waste your and other person time.

I am quite surprized by your response.... If someone is selling Life Insurance ... and calls a person... makes an appointment... Who's the needy here? If the other party is giving an appointment it means they are looking for the information.
Do they have to waste other person's time to send a msg.? Do you want to say people do not have the GUTS to say NO?
No one forces appointment on anyone.... atleast not always... everyone understands the difficult situation if there is any.

But unfortunately that does not happen in most of the cases. People who genuinely understands always tell wether they want to meet or not. and believe me I have seen people who are extremely busy but if they have agreed to meet they would make time.

Com'n .... this is a known fact. Recently i have met an american girl who is getting married to Indian guy...

"She was going to meet me at my house and she emailed me and said that if I am saying 9.30am ... I'll be there at 9.30... there is no IST with me.. do not get shocked if I come aroud 9:30"

But I do agree that everyone speaks on the basis of their own experience. My experience is 99% of the time non-desi do keep their appointment or call if it needs to be changed but it's totally opposite with desis.

My whole point of posting this thread is.. to convey to our community that as you make an effort to keep your Drs. appointment or kids game appointment or a birthday party... just do a little effort to write somewhere or put a reminder in your cell if you make an appointment or just simply say NO if you do not want to meet. DO NOT WASTE OTHER PEOPLES TIME.

You may be in a job to EARN YOUR LIVING... the other person is also trying to put food on his or her table... but with different source.. why do you want to paly with it? Just a little seriousness would earn respect for you.

Some might reply to this saying that when you are self employed it's gonna happen... being in the field I understand that everyone I talk to is not going to like what I have to say or sell... we are not asking for yes's all I am trying to say is not to waste other person's time. I hope it's not a lot to ask.

I do not know what happened while posting my reply above. Only part of it supposed to be light grey colour.

Let us be honest, if I need information on LI I would call an agent. If an agent is calling me to provide information that is his/her need to get business. Well I was talking about appointment at work place and not the one which are made at leisure. I guess that is the original intent of starting this discussion. Dinner / lunch are different story all together, I don't treat them the same way.
It is a courtesy to accept an appointment if I am not booked. But when emergency occurs I feel it is important for me to attend to important business rather than sit and listen to a sales person. Sometime I may remember to call and cancel other time I have to request them to release me in 5 minutes.
Also Sometime sales person are calling to book an appointment just because they are passing by me on their drive to cottage. So you need to have both side of the story.

The majority of Desis do keep appointments, if not at the first appointed time at another appointed time. :)

I don't know which non Desis people are talking about here, only an American has been given as sample, but man if you deal with Latinos, Africans, Philipinos.... as far as keeping appointments on time , they are worse than Desis.

Yesterday I had an appointment with a Philipino lady at 12.30 pm. I arrived on time, but she wasn't there. At 1 pm I called and left her a message. At 2.30 she calls and says she is sorry she couldn't make it. Tom I have another apptmnt with her. This is just the most recent case. Also I had an apptmnt with a Caucasian Canadian guy- born and bred here- yesterday. I called ahead and he forwarded it to today and again today forwarded it to tomorrow.

Why do we knock Desis all the time? Is it 'cos most of our experiences are with Desis, so even if 60% keep apptmnts on time what we remember are the 40%?
(60% is still the majority).

If anyone has worked in certain latino countries, you will know their laid back attitude and their tomorrow philosophy and their casual leave...
