Hello Cds,
My parents are visiting to Canada.
Is it necessary to buy the travel insurance ?
Does anyone have an idea how important is it?
I appreciate your help.
Thanks to all.

Hi,
Out of over 200 travel insurance policies I have issued to visiting parents in the last 4 years, I have had the occasion to only 'genuinely' claim on four.
By that I mean something major occurred, like slipping and hurting limbs, hospitalisation for whatever reasons including asthma etc..
Also there are several who have claimed (I have lost count) for therapeutic massage and other stuff just for "paisa vasool". Recently I had a case of someone who went for acupuncture to get rid of a pain that was nagging her since years and now she feels as good as new and the insurance paid for it. The money runs into a few hundreds.
I do know that for the four "genuine"cases that ran into 5 figures, the people who were insured were superlatively thankful. 2 of them still send me Diwali cards and a third an Xmas card.
For me, I would insure any parents who visit, as there are several ways of getting your money back through massage sessions and the greatest thing is peace of mind.
From here onwards it's your call.
Some credit cards provide travel and medical insurance coverage. Does it work if I pay for my parent trip from India to Canada on that card?

Quote:In *most* cases, that kind of coverage works only for the cardholder himself/herself.

Hi Invest Pro,
I picked up this old post.
I am will be migrating to Canada and shall be reaching early September, 2011.
We are a family of four - 44, 41, 15 & 7. Can you please advice what is the value of the cover we should look for. I understand that we should have the cover for 90 days. It looks like that it would be better to take a cover from Canada based companies instead of the Indian companies.
Thanks for the help.
Which ones are good providers? Any links/experiences? My parents are above age of 65 and are in good health.
My advice is RBC Insurance. They are fast in processing their claims. Or u can check with Bank of Montreal or CAA. Do not go for those small companies as they will give u headache when processing ur claims. I heard that CAA has good rates but not sure for visitor medical ins.
