Canada - An Immigrants Mirage
By:

We all have dreams and we do strive to be successful in life in our own chosen and selected paths. We all want to do something important and that’s what the “struggle for existence” is.

I came from India to US on an IT job to silicon Valley . Worked there for 2 years and saw what a developed country like US had to offer. Felt the excitement in the air and the will of people to succeed in life . People worked more hours then usual because they wanted to spend more than what they could afford . Life was good and going well.

Not that I was not doing good in India. I was working in Bangalore for the Top 5 consulting firms and making good money there too. But the chance of coming to the "Land of opportunities" and making it "BIG" and attaining the "American dream" was always there . Some due to listening from friends how good USA was and some seeing the ever-increasing exchange rate of the US$ against the Indian Rupee

Life does has its good and Bad. When the IT bubble "Burst" as they say, most of the folks around lost their Jobs. Some went back to India, some like me who had filed for Canadian immigration felt lucky to move to another place close than selling everything and moving to India. So there our life started.

We sold off most of our stuff and drove up north - to US-Canada Border on I-5 feeling great that now we have our own country where we will no more be "ALIENS". We crossed the border and moved into a small place and started our life. Did not get an IT job as I did not have Canadian experience. Canadian experience for an IT job, did not understand it Term for the 1st month . I was thinking whether the computers in Canada are different from what is made all over the world or perhaps there Java, Microsoft or Oracle is different. Well , we had good savings to life was not that bad. Saw people around us doing labour jobs not that they are bad but doctors and MBA's doing labor jobs is even unseen in India.

Staying there for more than 2 months and seeing the way new immigrants around me were surviving , I was really questioning which is a developed country , India or Canada. Well, I had my part o contribute to Canada also . Took a Job at the Departmental store for $9 can per hour . That was a lot of downfall. From $65 US per hour to 9$ can per hour is a lot of downgrade. People could not understand Why I have a BMW 3 series but I am working in a departmental store.

What do I explain them . Well , stayed in Canada for 8 months and moved back to US for a Car company project and filed for my Green Card .

Enough of Canada for me for now .I guess I am not strong like other Immigrants here who are toiling their lives here for years now hoping that they will make it "BIG" one day .

My frank (personal) opinion, India is better than Canada if you have to work in the night's for 9$ can and spend your life waiting for your BIG day

Hi all,

I fully agree with goldeneye.

I am a prospective immigrant to Canada. I have been working in Gulf for a multi-national company with good, tax free salary. But I still want to migrate to Canada for the reasons, goldeneye analysed very well.

In the Gulf, if anyone is caught by police without carrying his civil ID, he will be put in jail, till someone picks his civil ID from his home and show it to the police. It does not matter how long he has been living in the country.

Canada offers Citizenship after staying for three years. I understand that the Canadian passport is respected in most of the world. A Desi's salary can be double (not always) in Gulf, if he is holding the Canadian (western) passport.

I request Senior Desi's there to give a moral support to the frustated fellow Desi's.

Regards,

Erra

Respect!!! You get more than respect in Gulf if you have a western country passport.
I am working in Qatar in one of the Government organization which has a huge multinational workforce. Recently Qatar had a housing rent hike by more than 100% which strained everyone’s pocket (by the way things are no more rosy in Gulf, you have taxes, we have crazy rents). My corporation gave a straight increase of 35% on all westerner’s basic salaries but us; the Asian lot was totally ignored. Since there are no human rights here and of course no one complaint against the corporation management the topic was discussed for a few days and then forgotten.

Every country has its own pros and cons.

The Middle east is full of Desi-Canadians who stayed for 3 years in Canada , got there passport and are back to the middle east. Soon they will be so many that it will be back to square one for desis.

A few years ago being a PR of Canada , or a H1 holder in US was condidered great. Soon there is a flood of immigrants especially in the 1998-2003 period. So much so that there are so many immigrant desis that only a few Canadian citizens among desis were (so called ) priviliged. Now there are so many desis holding Canadian Citizenships that soon they would be considered equal to the rest of desis ( esp. in Middle east ). It is just like a club membership. The moment the club loses it charm , exclusivity then the membership loses its value. Like wise a Canadian Citizenship or a US F1/H1 visa. There are just sooooo.... many of them , that these days if a desi is going back to India not many are turning up to receive them in the airport.

Why did you bother to migrate
If you are living in a Paradise like Singapore as you claim then why the Hell did you bother even to migrate to Canada. ...?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May all Fellow desis note that Singapore does not offer status ( Permanent residency ) except under exceptional cases with stringent conditions. Also no matter how long you work in Middle east ( Gulf ) you are not given status and neither can a immigrant worker own any property. Also our passports have to be surrendered and yearly work visas extended to be able to stay there. So we always have found and continue to find people from Singapore and Middle east who had very good jobs there but still choose to immigrate to Canada for future. They know that after a certain stage money is not everything and move to Canada for status, safety, investment and above all childrens education. ( All these moves are done knowing fully well about Canada ) Why did you think somebody came here ,failed , and after going back why did he choose to come back and try his luck again.?
The answer is also hidden in their posts . Canada does offer something more than their well paying jobs .
Remember a fellow desi who came here twice and lost his PR and how he is thinking of trying to renew the status or still not being able to overcome the loss of PR etc..
Well , enough said on this topic. I am not criticizing anyone but we can see their intent and desperation to succeed in Canada , through their very own posts.
Good luck to all
;)
