Remember you are are allowed to bring in for personal use not for giving gifts to relatives etc. and thats where almost all Indians love to break the law and blame it on customs.

REally? I never knew you are NOT ALLOWED TO CARRY GIFTS. Any place where I can see this as a rule Gapodi?

And when I used to live in India, my overseas (non-Indian) friends brought me gifts - so my my ..............even they broke the law......Tauba Tauba!

And now let's get serious - Gapodi, I challange you to show me a rule which says gifts are not allowed to be brought into India. (if you have ever filled up Canadian customs forms, you will note it cleary asks you to list the value of gifts you are bringing into Canada - just for your info).

I do not work for Indian customs nor am I always right. But from what I know it is my understanding that someone travelling on Indian passport can be taxed very heavily for items that custom officer finds are not within bounds of the law.

http://www.chennaicustoms.org/passen/travel.htm
http://www.geocities.com/indiancustoms/

explains in detail what can be brought in a free allowance and also the question about gifts.

One somebody posts something on a message board one does not always need to comment or agree or disagree with every thing that person has mentioned.

Gapodi,

I would have not commented on your misunderstanding IF and only IF you had not belittled Indians!

What the hell do you mean by using derogatory remarks as:
'and thats where almost all Indians love to break the law' - I am an indian and am awfully offended by your remark implying we do illegal (breaking the law) activities. Mind your remaks - you are not only generalising but blaming a full nationality - and that too for a WRONG THING. In my personal view, you infact owe an apology for such a remark.

The site you have referred clearly says that you are allowed (if you are an Indian tourist) to bring in Rs 12,000 worth of gifts - that in general terms is called 'Duty free allowance'

Even if you hold a confirmed ticket, some airlines want you to reconfirm your ticket 72 hours prior to departure of flight.

Raj
I did in fact reconfirm the flight 96 hours before departure and so had many other customers. I was told that everything is perfect!
The details will be mentioned in the other thread which I will post today or on the week end.

Chandresh
I am sorry, I do not agree with you.

Well then, it is clear that your opinion is based on what your family, and friends do.

If anyone had any similar incident while flying in North America, please let us know. It will be handy to know what to expect in simlar denied boarding situations.
