I have been following the news about Laibar singh who applied for refugee status after arriving with false documents in 2003 in Canada. He was denied residency and ordered deported. He suffered either a stroke or spinal infection (depending on the media you read)..and now is permanently disabled in a wheelchair.
he has 2 children and his family back in India but has been given sanctuary in different sikh temples everytime the authorities come out to deport him. 1000 Sikhs protested at the vancouver airport a few weeks ago when he was brought there saying that its cruel and against human rights to deport him to India where he would not get adequate care.
What do CD's think of this case? We have had many discussions here about the health care of both countries.. would he be better off here?
do you support him staying here on humanitarian and compassionate grounds? Do you feel he should be made to go back..because after all he has family there..and isnt family reunification important?
Also: his sikh supporters are pledging to raise money for his costs so that taxpayers and the system is not burdened by his treatments etc. Why can they not do this for him in India?
what is your take on the whole political issue here. 1) disability issues and the rights of those who are unable to care for themselves 2) is this a race issue? 3) Can a 'mob' rush an airport..doesnt matter what the political issue is.. is there a potential security threat in the making?
Do Canadian laws not apply if one takes sanctuary in a church or temple?

Even taking into account humanitarian grounds, the bottom line is that this guy broke the law. I believe he should be deported as should anyone else in similar circumstances. Actually a while back I saw a documentary on CBC which showed how refugees(I know this guy entered illegaly) are processed at the airport. Quite a huge number of these 'refugee' claims are fraudulent. Canada has one of the highest percentages in the world of granting refugee status.
I feel sorry for this guy - He is one of the unlucky person. God has blessed us with everything and It is our duty to assist him in this situation. I am proud for the Sikh community even I am not Sikh.
