Hi all,

Do I have to buy my insurance before I drive my newly purchased car even for the first time (to bring it home from the seller)?

Thanks.
MG

If you are talking about your insurance - No
If you are talking about car insurance - You can not get car permit without car insurance

HI Desi#1
You will be amazed ( so was I ) to know that dealers can get you ownership w/o having insurance. I recently purchase a vehicle and the doc's were ready almost immediately . Dealer didnt even bothered to ask me my details .. It seems either they know someone inside OR they have used just any no. to register the vehicle .

Mighty important : Call your insurance ,give them VIN no , have them insured your vehicle and than only drive it home . It is recommended that they sned you a photocopy of the insurance slip which u can carry in car .
If you are unable to reach your insurance people on time get this car towed to your home .. It is not worth taking risk .

Legally, you cannot register your car in ON without insurance. They need your insurance number for issuing reg. stickers

Q - Title & insurance should be 02 independent things no ?

You might own a car , but wish not to drive it or keep it in your garage - in which case you have the ownership but not the insurance .

Insurance comes to the picture when the car comes on road - I am curious what happens if in the above case , if the person buys a car and while getting it to his house meets an accident - who bears 3rd party expenses and will the owner face penalty for not having insurance .

But in case of a used car , one can request the owner to park the car in your garage before signing the ownership form and you can get it insured anytime before taking out the car .... Is that correct ?

Even if your car is not on road, it still needs insurance from theft, vandalism, fire etc.

You can also ask the car dealership selling the car to you to transport the car into your garage (i.e. someone would drive it to your home) as part of the purchase deal. I am sure most dealers would do that just to seal the deal.
