We are in such a bad winter snap this year, I have never heard of "WHITE CHRISTMAs" from coast to coast here in Canada. This is one of the years.
Now they have brought a rule of SNOW Tires in QUEBEC Province. So, that is one item to watch if you don't have such tires and will be passing through that Province.
Driving during these hard times are treacherous at best. When you pass Kingston near Gananoque all of a sudden you encounter icy roads, (in the nights) and you skid and get airborne. If you see anyone in the ditch on your side or the opposite side, pump your brakes and slow down fast, because the next guy in the ditch is you!!, because it is the indication that the road is icy. Watch and slow down a mile before you come to a long concrete bridge. Always carry your Cell Phone with you. It will come handy.
Always travel on highways where you see a lot of traffic. Do not take short cuts or go into towns to see sights.
Quebec has Winter Carnival. So also Ottawa, see if falls in those days that you are traveling. Take a lot of clothes to layer yourself and a shovel and quick snacks to keep you alert and going.
Some open stretches have snow drifts making the roads buttery, so watch out for the drifting snow. Slow down and take it easy. Carry a spare gallon of W.S. Washer fluid.
Take a lot of breaks that way you know you can enjoy the drive. If you have a companion then it makes it even enjoyable. I drove on the 12th Dec. a full moon day and it was cold but it was enjoyable. If the weather is cloudy or dark, cut down the travel times to suit the conditions. Start at six, if you have to escape the morning rush and be the first one to hit the highways there.
Nova Scotia gets all the four seasons even during the winter season. So you will see the change in climate within the same week.
If you have a decent car, well tuned and have some one with you, then, take a shot at it. Take 401 E, and 40 - 15 and take a break. Then at Riviere du loop take the next one. http://travel.nextag.com/buyer/travel/index.jsp;jsessionid=A503DEAFDC1756EC0B1FBC5C041D0C68?nxtg=2b090a1c05a3-DE3AF0758F3B78B9&search=riviere+du+loup+quebec&type=hotel
Then it is a long drive to the NB/NS border. Break there closer to Truro/Hantsport.
Mind you, there will not be much to see anywhere, but it will be just a winter trip. Do take a lot of pictures for memories.
Anything else feel free to post here. Some one who did make a winter run at least one way might be able to relate their experiences here.
See if it is worth making it.
Merry X-Mas.
Freddie.

Please see the link. You will love it. To go east you take the south shore 15 South. To go north to the ski slopes, take the 15 North (Nord) and leads to route 17.

You got to be a ski buff to enjoy the chest nut in the open fire.
Happy Holidays.
