HALIFAX! HALIFAX!
Go there if you have the job. I have family friends there (quite old people, been there for 30 years). They are very happy there and miss the Atlantic Ocean every time they are in India. I too have decided to settle in Halifax if I get the chance.
hey guys ... i am moving to p.e.i. as i got company transfer there ..
can i expect desis .. indians over there ..????
if anybody know perticular about Prince Edward Island (Charlottetown) then please reply me asap...

I would like to know how much would be the desi population over there , in case anyone is aware .
How s the desi community there . Someone has informed me that there are Indian temples there .Is that true ?
Considering the cost of living to be less , how much should a CAD 60 K salary in Toronto equate to in Halifax - CAD 70 / CAD 80 k ??
I would appreciate if people could respond as I am looking into some job offers from Halifax -
my only concern - being considered as a retiring person's paradise - how difficult it would be to come back to the main stream jobs of the GTA / Vancouver ?

replying regarding your information about Halifax. Halifax has got some amount of indian community as its spread out in Halifax - dartmouth - bedford. most of indian people are well settled here like doctors , professers etc.
you can find good indian students here as halifax has got some good universities.
City is quite and slow pace , you may get cultural shock at intial stage. but overall its good place to stay .with nice weather , low crime rate and british type of life style.
halifax has good best and effective medical system in all over canada with having highet educated workforce.
halifax has got indian temple and every sunday u can find indian people there.
its less expensive then toronto so u can compare toronto's 50K salary is eual to N.S. 60 to 65k salary. housing price are cheap but other side you may found other stuff little expensive then Toronto like Gas and all...
overall its good and secure place to stay where you and your family can have a good life specificly for kids..
good luck
It is a myth that Halifax is cheaper than Toronto. Having lived in both places for a while I think I can compare the two.
Firstly, Halifax has practically no jobs.
Secondly, the rents in Halifax aren't very low. Yes you can get a one bedroom in Dartmouth for about 590 or 600 but to get a decent place in halifax you need to shell out close to 700 bucks, whereas in Toronto we're talking about maybe in the 850-900 range. So it really is not that different.
The weather is good? Yes it snows less than Toronto, but it is far windier and with much more rain and consequently less sunshine than Toronto.
Universities in NS have the highest tuition in the country.
There is no health premium, so that would be a plus but wait times for any minor procedure is longer than Toronto..
Gas, and groceries are both significantly more expensive than Toronto.
And the housing prices have gone up quite a bit and are actually now comparable to Mississauga, Brampton etc.
Income taxes(if you find a job) are much higher.
If you want to fly anywhere, (elsewhere in Canada, India, US) etc, you will shell out at least 200-300 bucks more per ticket.
The Indian 'temple' is just a little more than a house with the pratima etc. But yes there are gatherings, especially on Sunday etc.
Overall, halifax is a great place to retire, it isn't really the ideal place if you're trying to make a living.
Thanks a lot vikcan & yellowknife,
I really appreciate your inputs .
Taxes on a 60 K salary are higher by 2 K which is the component of higher rent you would pay in a place like Toronto. So thats off set . I wonder if the groceries and other products / services are cheaper than Toronto.
But yes its a smaller place - that again has its pros and conses.
I will think twice before moving there . Any information / experience in Halifax if shared would be highly appreciated .
