There wont be any immediate problem (while u are in the US)..But, if there any problems associated with the visa status (e.g., applying for health insurance that is compulsory for J1 visa holders), you may have to answer questions. -- I-539 allows the change of status while in the US. "J dependent" to TD seems to be possible as per the form I-539 and it needs the spouse's proof of TN. Therefore it is implied that TD can be changed while in the US when your spouse gets his status changed. The US embassy people always scare you - like some people who tell you TN->GC is too complex or is impossible because TN is single intent status and blah, blah..
In the end, I agree with the point that it is better to seek advice from the immigration attorney (than to ask any US embassy official) and also because of the fact that I am also not a immigration professional.
