There are a number of moving companies who are charging from 45/hr (2 men) as below . Does anyone have good / bad experience with either of them ?

Royal Crown Movers 416.825.0322
Gateway Movers 416.723.6683
Elite Moving Services 416.919.6683 -- same no. ;)
Skyline Movers 647.895.6004

What are the hidden costs that we can ask about ? Fuel / lunch / ??

What are other things that we can ask in advance to avoid surprises .

Not used any of them any time - though got a quote from Elite guys once. Ended up using a russian guy - AR movers or so in York Mills. They were okay. they did not ask for food or fuel or so.. though we had kept some snax, juice and pop for them. They really took only juice + very little snax.

Only thing I will say is, try to get the early morning appointment - 8 AM or so. That way, they will come on time rather than coming late and tired.

Fido,
I would advise you to take reffered guys rather than finding people on your own.
From what I have heard, Bad movers come at all rates. They could be cheap as well as costly guys and then demand more.
If I was in your case, I would follow up with guys recommended by CD's. To cross check, you could put their business through the BBB and find out if they have any complaints.
Morever, movers donot ask for 10% or 20% more. Sometimes as said in CD, they can ask you straight for $500 or $1000 more than the actual charges and hence you would do better with people who are refferef by others. Be careful also that you do not get into the marketing traps. Try guys who are reffered by CD's who have been here for a long time and not refferaks from people who have just single digit postings.
Hope this helps.

Peace

This was the guy -> Alex http://www.ARMoving.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK Tel. 416-834-3004 . He comes with two other guys, Those two will be doing all the moving and he will be waiting by the truck to stack things and pad them up. if you are moving into/from an apartment, you can save some move time if one person stay in the unit and another by the truck. He charged me $50 per hour + $50. But it was in winter. His regular rate is $65 or so. You can negotiate.

He had come half hr early; but since the apartment lift was booked only from 8, he waited until then and did not charge for that time - he himself saying it was his mistake coming early and he won't charge me. Total move took 5 hrs, though we felt it could have been done in 4. They do eat up sometime here and there, but more importantly, everything was moved without any damage.

Btw, based on the experience of a friend of mine, when you move, drive your car just ahead/behind the move truck. In his case - different mover - the movers "lost" their way for a Mississauga - Brampton move and took an hour extra to reach the destination!

Please do not generalise about desi movers. I used one to move within Mississauga with no issues and absolutely professional people who were insuranced. Paid $350 to move from a condo to a house.

3 more friends used the same guy with no issues. Money paid after unloading. Stuff was put where they were told. Basement and diferent rooms. Sofas were clinged wrapped etc

If anyone is interested PM me and I can give you his number.

They land by abt 10 am (3 people), waste time till 12 and ask for lunch. (MInd you the charges were $ 80 per hour). They then insisted that they be paid $ 300 advance before they start loading the goods. They ultimately take one load partly filled to the new premises. But to offload, they forced us to give them 3000 $$$. Upon seeking cops assistance, they showed the form which was signed by my friend, the last clause stating that before the goods are removed from the truck, all balances have to be paid. No where was the computation, how the charges were, whereas it was clearly stated at $ 80 per hour.

The only folly was that we wanted to give business to our country cousins!! And this is what we get!

Please be aware of their arm twisting tactics

i will say that it is always best to support and use the services and give business to our fellow community people.
