DV,
Looks like you are confused. Take it from an Architect who is doing drafing work in Canada for the past 6 years at just $13 per hour (current salary).
First of all, what kind of experience do you have? Buildings or Infrastructure or Estimation or what?
Where and how many years of exp. do you have?
If you have decided to move to alberta, currently there MIGHT be jobs in the petroleum industry (not Oil sands though), like laying of pipes, petroleum related buildings etc... Also see if Alberta wants to spend on infrastructure to ride the recession and provide jobs to people like buiding rail roads, highways, bridges etc... Even Ontario may be doing the same.
As far as I am concerned, Ontario is a safe province and there may be other oppertunities to you here other than civil engg. like estimation, material sales etc... Calgary / Edmonton was a very small place before people moved in for oil sands expansion. Now that it is bust, it may again return to being a very small place. again in Ont / Alberta, I doubt if Condo's, houses, Retail , commerical complexes will be built during the recession. The small percentage that will be built will be taken care of by the already experienced civil engr's.
In my whole 6 years in Ontario, I have never found a civil (desi) engr. working in building or infrastructure projects. Most are unemployed or working in other related areas like drafting, sales, estimation etc...
Seeing that you have a new 2009 car without having a job for 6 months (in your line), I only can assume that you are from the Gulf or you have been born with a silver spoon. Selling the car now is a waste. Take it to Alberta by driving it. You can also arrange (rent) a u-haul trailer and tow your things in it attached to your car.
Again depending upon your situation, try to make the best use (like going alone to see the market in Alberta for 3 months and then taking your family / send resumes and the go there and follow it up etc....)
Canada has been designed to milk the desi / South Asian immigrants (except IT and Finance) to the max. so that you are left without money and your line job and that you will be forced to do labour job etc.. and so donot get caught in the system.
Hope this helps

Peace

TK i have been reading your posts regualarly and am really impressed with your sense of sharing. However i feel you have take your eyes of the ball so to say. I know from your posts that you have been staying here in Canada for last 6 years and have been stuck in this job.

In one of your earlier posts you had mentioned about your collegues having changed jobs and getting better salaries ..... dont you think it is time you took a hard look at what you are doing. Maybe you need to speak to some of your collegues and find out what options are avaiable. I know one tends to get complacant with time and enjoys the job secuirty ..... but i guess it is time to spread those wings. Hope you take it in the right spirit. Cheers

FYI,

Oil Break-Even Prices
Nation US$/Barrel
Bahrain 40
Kuwait 17
Saudi Arabia 30
U.A.E. 25
Oman 40
Qatar 30
Canada's oil sands 33

Profitability at $100/barrel oil
Nation Break-Even Price Profitability
Kuwait 17 488%
U.A.E. 25 300%
Saudi Arabia 30 233%
Qatar 30 233%
Canada's oil sands 33 203%
Bahrain 40 150%
Oman 40 150%

Understandably, the profit really matters in Canada due to the expensive workforce compared to Middle eastern countries.
