I wish to inform you of the trauma given by the above to shift a house within Mississauga and would like to warn everyone. They were to move 1 truckload of household stuff. They land by abt 10 am (3 people), waste time till 12 and ask for lunch. (MInd you the charges were $ 80 per hour). They then insisted that they be paid $ 300 advance before they start loading the goods. They ultimately take one load partly filled to the new premises. But to offload, they forced us to give them 3000 $$$. Upon seeking cops assistance, they showed the form which was signed by my friend, the last clause stating that before the goods are removed from the truck, all balances have to be paid. No where was the computation, how the charges were, whereas it was clearly stated at $ 80 per hour.

The only folly was that we wanted to give business to our country cousins!! And this is what we get!

Please be aware of their arm twisting tactics

Your information is incomplete. So what happened finallywhen the cops came. Did you shell out $ 3000 or less than that. Did the cops agree to $80 an hour wage?
The problem with Desi's is that they speak to you in Hindi and get to know your weak point and then threaten you.
I would suggest that you name the company in the BBB (Better Business Beureau) and also an information to CD's that they should first go to the BBB and choose a mover who has no complaints. Generally movers from the BBB are professional. You can even trust the low cost chinese guys who are more honest than some of our Desi friends.
When I moved, what I did was I packed everything except the not packable (like cloths, utensils etc..). When the movers came, it was very easy for them to move my packed boxes and they were very pleased with the work that I had done.

Peace

I had also gone thru same experience even when the movers were not Desi. They wasted lot of time; looking around, filling many forms and all with whatever tactics they knew. After loading everything in truck, they demanded $ 1000; saying the same is in the clause I have signed. Being just a year old in Canada (in 2004) and no copy of signed papers with me, I paid. One main reason being, we were too happy for we were moving to our own home, first of lifetime. Pleading with them, a neighbor coming to our rescue, pretending calling police on phone; nothing worked. Rather it all added an hour to their ‘working time’.
For the sake of not spoiling the happiness of moving to our own home (first in life) the money was paid, which was 400-500 more than what was settled. It was’ like paying eunuchs by nose on happy occasions back in India. Worse, they dumped all the stuff on driveway of new home. We moved everything by our self; the only solace was the ‘Grah Parvesh’, the first in my life.

My experience with the Desi Movers was BAD. We used Desi Movers and they told us it would be 50$ per hour. They were two people (black) and just the same they took an advance of 300$, which my husband readily gave.

Half way through the loading, they asked another 200 which was a total of 500. My husband got suspicious and we asked to speak to the boss. And trust you me, we kept trying but in vain, their boss, the so called Robert Singh was unable to contact and then when I actually got him, he was very rude and crude in his talk. My husband said it was ok to give him the money or else he will not go. So we gave the guys a total of 500$.

Guess, what they loaded the truck and the man asked for another 500 or else the truck was not going. He also threatened us saying that if we went to the police then there would be an additional 200 charge for going to the police and a waiting charge. By then I lost my cool and went to the police for help. And to my dismay, the police refused to help as it was a civil matter.

How I missed India. I bet in India the police would surely take some action and would not have let this happen.

So, we were left with no choice but to pay the guy another 500. We paid them the 500 and they then took us to the destination. Once there, the guy made a bill which read a total of 1900$. By now we already paid 1000 and now he was asking for another 900. That got the worse out of me and I created a scene. I have 2 kids, 2yr & 5mth old baby. The 2year old was in day care and the 5mth old with us.

They started their job at 9.30am and by the time we got to our new place it was 5pm. This is from Mississauga Valley to Sherobee. I got hysterical and called 911, I was yelling at the lady who tried to calm me down by explaingin how this was not a police matter. But I too did not give in and she had to send in the police. The police came and as it was a civil matter and they had no control over the issue, the owner of Desi Movers took advantage and said that they either pay us the amount or else the truck would go to the storage. I couldn't beleive, that the police too allowed this to happen. It was pathetic.

What could we do but give in. We had the police there who was trying to negotiate a deal and the owner of Desi Movers actually got his price. The only consolation the police gave was that once we are settled, we could go to BBB and claim our money back.

I dont know does that (BBB) actually work???????? and how does one go about with the BBB????

We had bad experience with Desi Movers. It's a shame to the community if the guys are really "Desi" or just using the term.

In our last move from Toronto to Mississauga we used Jia Jia International Moving. I saw there office in Markham. They gave us 8 big boxes for moving. They did not charge us for that.
They charged us $60 per hour + 1 hour for transit time plus taxes for 2 peopel and a 20ft truck.
Could you find someone cheaper? May be...but who knows what you have to pay for cheaper services?
They came on time and completed moving within 4 hours including loading, travel to Mississauga and unloading.
They called us 2 times before the date of moving to confirm our plans. (Desi did not pick up my calls when it was time to move).

This is Jia Jia's contact:
Jia Jia International Moving Inc.
150 Telson Rd. Unit B
Markham, On. L3R 1E5
Office: 905-305-1688
24 HRS: 416-565-1378
Fax: 905-305-1678.

I will be happy to be of more help to those who need.

Thanks.

I had co-ordinated my friend's house move last winter (December 2007) and had shopped around a bit. I had engaged the services of an Italian family based moving business (16 feet truck with 2 guys, father and son) and it was a good experience. The total worked out to $450 and they charged for 5 and a half hours. No time wasting and total professionals. They did not even round off the time to the next hour (rather the next 30 minutes).

The hourly rate charged to me was $85 per hour. Note that movers who charge way less than market rates, will have hidden charges always.
