Hi, I worked with the Canadian Army in Ottawa. I was working on a IT Project and was contracted thru a local company. I interfaced mostly civilians but some uniformed guys too. It was a good experience in total. Infact, I loved Defense all my life and my dream was to join and serve Indian Forces. I would definitely encourage you to try your options there as long as it is a non-combat role.
You need to be a Citizen first. You will get all info at their website. You can also chat with an Online recruiter who will answer your questions.

Hello GuptaJi :
Actually, I had to get my 'Enhanced Reliability' Check done before I was allowed to start. It checks the last 5 years. It was early 2001 and Enhanced started getting longer to clear - but since, I got a good recommendation - I got it in a week. I was also not in the country for the last 5 years, at that point in time.
After I joined, I went ahead and applied for 'Secret' - it took me 1 year. Someone representing either the local Police or IB (cannot recall which one) went to my house in West Bengal and enquired about me.
I would advise you to apply for these Security Clearances ASAP, as sometimes it can hold you back - no matter how good you are.
For us, it takes a lot of time since most of us are not here for the last 5 or 10 years.
All the best
Hello GuptaJi :
Yes, you can apply for Enhanced Reliability without being a Citizen. I got one when I was an immigrant.
I work in IT - so my employer (a contracting company working with the Department of National Defense) moved my papers for ER. It is way faster than doing it on our own. This is because, they have Security Administrators who knows how to apply and they give a good recommendation. They will generate 'Urgency' and it will quicken the process.
So, look for a company in your line of business - who is willing to sponsor your ER. That will make it faster.
Otherwise, pl apply ASAP.

Hello GuptaJi,
Going thru a company will definitely faster as they put their weight behind.
Call/Meet/Chat with a CF recruiter and ask them about it - they should help you out with info. I think, PWGSC Ottawa does that.
Convince the company that you want to work with them and they will do it.

Above link is an example of such companies who would sponsor.
Between the time, I applied and now - things must have changed. So, pl apply thru a company.
Also, get all your Indian Certificates - 'Equivalenced'. Otherwise, it can be another stumbling block. Get it done thru 'University of Toronto - Comparative Education Services'. It took me 4 months but I personally would prefer it than going to any private organizations (who do this kind of job).
This I decided after talking with the US Embassy Ottawa. They said, they feel more comfortable with UfT's - whatever that means.
Best Wishes
