Hello, my husband & I want my mother to visit us for few months. My husband is here on a temporary work permit which is valid for one year. I have not yet started to work so I don't have any income. My husband has a decent salary and is willing to invite his mother-in-law.
1. Since I do not have a job/salary, how will this affect the visa approval?
2. How much bank balance should we show on her name?
3. What are the other documents required?

Thanks for your help!

Technically, you are inviting and not sponsoring.
But anyway, you need to prove your status, employment and income.
So copy of your and husband's visa, passport, job letter, salary stubs, rental agreement (or home ownership), etc. should be adequate.
Also needed is a letter of invitation stating the reason and duration of stay.

There is no predefined bank balance limit.

Your mother will have to provide supporting documentation from her end as well, like her proof of residence, employment, bank balance etc.

The CIC website and the website for the consulate where visa will be applied will have more specific information.

I recently did the same for my Father in Law and my wife also does not work.

1. You are inviting not sponsoring. Sponsoring is for a PR Application. Invitation is for Visit Visa.
2. Your husband needs to write an Invitation letter addressed to Canadian Consulate, India stating his employment, salary, when you guys came to canada.
3. State in the letter that your husband is inviting his MIL for a short period to Canada, will bear all expenses including medicals. And then she will go back,
4. Prodvice Salary letter from employer.
5. Provide T4.
6. All letters should be attested.
7. Your MIL should provide similar documents from her side.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your replies. I edited the post by removing 'sponsoring'.

My mother is a home-maker. So she will not be having any salary documents.

Akscanada, what is T4? And how do we get attestation done for my husband's documents in Toronto? I know the process in India (that attestation can be done by any gazetted officer) but I'm not sure of the process involved in Canada.

T4 are your tax returns which you do here in Canada. Canada Tax Agency will send you a slip once you file your return. You should take copy of your T4.

Attestation is a must. Do not send documents without attesting them. There are many New Comers / Immigration agencies run by Canadian Government to help people. I went to one called Polycultural something ( don't remember ).
They charged only $10 for all the documents.

Hope that helps.
