This is for one of my friend. My friend's wife came on student visa and her husband (my friend) came as a dependant with an open work permit. He is working in IBM - Toronto in IT field. As he is a dependant of his wife, he got work permit till the date of his wife's study permit.

Now.... his wife's study permit is expiring in couple of months and she will move on Post Graduate work permit. So what are the options available for her husband (my friend) who is a dependant... What are the ways of extending his visa ? He wont be dependant anymore when his wife will get PG work permit.
I know only one option that is student visa..... Is there any other intelligent option does any one have ?
Thanks in advance guys...
Cheers...!!

If his employers are happy with his work they can sponsor his work permit.

I really dont think that you should reply with the same option that I have already mentioned.

Normally it is HRDC approval route, but that is not a difficult thing.
It is just routine correspondence exercise for a big company HR Department, much easier than recruiting an efficient & reliable worker.

I am not sure if this applies in Canada, but in the US even if you are in OPT (similar to PG work permit in Canada, which you get after you finished a degree), you are still considered a student and your dependent has same rights until the OPT expires. Lots of my friends are working using their OPTs and thier wives/husbands are still in the US legally under OPT I-20. Of course, they (dependents of students) cannot get work permits to work like in Canada.

You might want to check with the university, if you have not already done so.

Thank you very much for that info "Canada_Hope"....
It is possible to extend my friend's visa on based of his wife's PG work permit.
We have confirmed that with CIC..
So yea.. Its a good news.... He doesn't neet switch to Student visa.... He can extend his work permit.....
Cheers up...
