Never ever go with LANCER. It has nothing called reliability associated with it.

I would go with Honda Civic ........ Compared to Corolla, it has STYLE along with all other points you are looking for.

Value for money: - In terms of features Mazda 3 is best Bang gor Buck. Next is Corolla, next is Civic.
Reliability:- Toyota will be the most reliable with with Honda very close. Maza 3 will be behind by a long way
Economy::- Toyota and Civic are tied for this.
Resale:- Toyota and Civic are tied for this.

I will add something

Most responsive engine: Mazda3, Corolla, Civic (if it were manual transmission i would have put Civic first, but with a small engine and a poorly configured auto i would never buy the civic auto. However if i were buying manual civic would be my first choice of the 3)

Most comfotable car over rough roads: Corolla, Mazda 3, Civic

However reliability of all 3 cars are above average.

If you want sports car like performance and are willing to pay a little extra for gas then MAzda 3
If you want to buy manual: Civic
If you want reliability, comfort, good gas mileage: Corolla

i wouldnt buy the lancer

Thanks a lot fellas for your comments . I have known that Corolla has been a best seller for quite some decades :) .... they must have built a consistent product to achieve that kind of brand reputation .

Civic beats the Corolla in style and thats why I would not doubt if it sells more (which I belive it does in the US ) .

I will keep my choice on Corolla ---- next q - is it better to buy 2008 model or 2009 ?? Will 2008 model be @ a discount as 2009 would be released soon ??

.... I agree with Viggy on which ever gives a better deal ....... wonder as a rule which one does ?

Obviously the 2008 will be at a discount compared to the 2009 - but it will be worthwhile to check if there have been any upgrades to 2008 Model in 2009 and if the price difference is justified due to this upgrade. Also, you may save a grand on 2008 model over 2009 (if the features are the same), but down the line, if you resell, it will fetch a few grand less as well...

Corolla is generally lower cost and cheaper on insurance compared to Civic.

On a related note, looking at the Gas prices and the trend for eco-friendly products, I expect the prices of 2nd hand Gas cars will go down substantially in the next 5-7 years and maybe totally out of favour within 10 years.

Another avenue to save a few grands is to look for 2007 or 2008 used car with less than 25000 KM - you might save a sizeable amount and still have a 'relatively new' car (still under manufacturer warranty) - remember, the car depreciates the most in the first year. The only catch is you might not have very attractive avenues for financing - if you are looking for this option.

Good luck.
Hiren

PS : I find the new generation Hyundai cars are not bad for 'value for money' - though I havent driven one, but the $$ equation looks good and the 5 yr bumper to bumper warranty is an icing on the cake..:D
