My friend is in a dilemma whether to deliver the baby in Canada or go to India for delivery. They have come here for long term project and they don't know many people here. They considered the option of bringing any family member here during the time of delivery but all the family members have responsibilities & jobs in India and can't leave the home for so many days.

Of course, for those who are planning to settle down in Canada or who have already settled down here, then Canada is definitely the better place. But how about those who have come here on long term projects (like 2 or 3 years) and who will be returning to India soon?

It would be really helpful to know your thoughts in terms of advantages & disadvantages of child birth in both countries.

Thanks & appreciate your help.

Though the healthcare system in Canada is really bad (when compared to private care in India), I would suggest that they do the delivery here. The most positive part will be that the baby will be a Canadian citizen and that will help the baby a lot in the future. He / she can come to Canada later for studies or work. As a Candian citizen he can also visit many countries without the need of any visa and the Candian govt. will do everything to uphold the dignity and honour of its citizens ,anywhere in the world. The parents just have to get OCI/PIO so that he can live as an Indian in India. He will even be able to access Canada's social benefits, if he come to Canada when he is working and is not able to find a job in Canada. As the parents are on a long term project, I am sure that they will have medical insurance to cover the pregnancy (otherwise costs can be prohibitive). In India it is atleast 1.5 lakhs for the delivery of a baby while in Canada it is free and your extended healthcare allows for a 2 bed/ in a room type of accomodation. Even the meals for the mother is covered.
Some hospitals in Ontario are so understaffed that you may not be able to avail personal attention to all your requirements (like access to a doctor after delivery for any pressing issue, use of the lacatation consultant when you need it etc...) but it is enough to manage on.
Being just the husband and wife will be a little pressing but the parents would be able to manage on with a little more effort. Depending on where you are, you may be able to hire some temp. nanny at $20 an hour or so who can help with the after delivery help. Also since only the husband is allowed to be on the bedside during delivery, I suggest that your friend (husband) speak to his employer that he will need atleast 2 to 3 weeks of vacation during delivery. Most employers in Ontario / Canada will not object to that genuine request.
Peace

It does not take 1.5 lakhs in India for a delivery. Though it might be different in different locations. As per my knowledge there is no need of taking a personal vacation during delivery in Canada. Parents (mother & father) get 12 months of maternity leave together which they can share among each other in case of expecting a child with a written doctor certification.

I think the best idea would be to deliver the baby in Canada to get the Canadian citizenship & latter if the family is moving to India, the baby can get the Indian OCI on their parents basis & can move with them. In future if the Canadian citizenship is some kind of problem for the baby & to the family, anyone can apply for the Indian citizenship after staying in India for 1 year on OCI.

Hope this helps

True, it does not cost 1.5 lakhs for delivery in India. It is usually around 40k even in good hospitals like apollo/wockhardt and even that amount is covered by insurance provided by her husband's company. So that way, baby delivery is free in India also.

Well, I'm not sure to what extent Canadian citizenship is going to help to the baby because the couple don't have any plans of returning to canada once the project is over. It 'might' help the baby after it grows (may be 20 years from now) but lot of things would have changed by then.

If I am not mistaken, one of the parents should be a eligible non-indian citizen for the minor to be eligible for OCI. In this case, the parents seem to be Indian citizens.

hmmm..... I took it for granted that one of the parents would definitely go for Canadian citizenship. I thought the 2-3 years project was to get the canadian citizenship & then return back to India. That is what most of the discussions come from & so I gave a reply considering the same.

Anyway this is the link for the OCI Eligibilty Criteria

If none of the parents go for Canadian citizenship, then I think the baby born would be a canadian citizen who would not be eligible for OCI.

It is better here..in india they usually do not go for normal delivery to avoid complications and if at all they go they do not go for painless(epidural) one..They take very good care in the hospitals here...About the canadian citizenship who know 20 years down the line chinese citizenship would be better :)...looking at the birth experiance and care facilities this place is better than india :)....
