I live in New York, I just got my PR, and now I have to land, I am thinking, I should go by car, but I have read somewhere some problems, I need some clarification, if anybody can help me out.

1. If I go by my own car, do I have to pay car Import duty ?
2. If I say, I will be back to ny in 15 days. would create any problem to my PR card process ?

Thanks in advance

Bharat

Since you are immigrating into Canada as a PR and trying to enter by road, they will consider that you are importing the vehicle into Canada. I know you want to say that you will only be living here in Canada for fifteen days, that will throw a monkey wrench into the system. They will ask you to drive back, without providing you an entry into Canada. So, that idea does not fly.

Now for importing of as Car: You can surely do it. You will have to contact the CBSA and ask them about the duties etc., and also obtain forms that needs to be completed prior to importing. Some of the vehicles are not compliant with the Canadian Ministry of Transport Motor Vehicle Specifications, one such thing is Emissions Test. There are other specifications that it has to meet and you will need to obtain the same from the manufacturers in the USA and submit them to the MOT and obtain clearance prior to importing it. The onus is on you to do it., There are other threads on this subject and please search and read them. Imports have been made by others and it will be nice to get more details from those who have done it.

So, be guided by that.

Freddie.

Rental companies (most probably) will not allow the car to be dropped in Canada.

I actually entered via a rental car(huron border). That time(Nov 2003) Hertz allowed me to drop the car in their Pearson Airport drop off location(I picked up from Chicago).Of course I paid like $100 extra. No problem faced with POE officers. I told them that I sold my car in USA.Actually one way rental will help you to prove them that you are going to stay.
It's good not to mention that you are going to visit Canada for 15 days.During return back to US you don't care about canadian POE as you have to face US POE officers only:)
