Im a bit confused on OHIP (Health Insurance in Ontario) because I have heard of 2 different scenarios on enrolling in the plan.

One thing I am clear on is that it will take 3 months after landing as a PR for OHIP to be valid. However I am confused on when to apply.

Some places I have read that you need to apply 3 months after landing along with utility bills and bank statements etc along with PR Card passports etc.

Other places I have read is that you can apply for card immediately after landing only thing is that you will get a card but the eligibility date can start after 3 months.

So can you apply for card immediately after landing or not (though the card validity may start 90 day henceforth).

Please clarify

You can apply for OHIP as soon as you have a proof of address..
Bank Statements, Driving Licence etc can be used to show as a proof of address..

It will take effect after 90 days.. but still its better to apply in advance.. so that you have the card with you when your coverage starts.

So, you need to apply for OHIP as soon as you arrive. Once you apply, it'll take three months to become covered. If anything happens before your coverage comes into effect, like an accidental injury or sudden emergency illness - you'll have to pay those expenses yourself.

That's why most new arrivals (PR's, foriegn workers, etc.)buy at least a basic "visitors to Canada insurance" policy. It'll usually only cost a few dollars a day, and it's way better to be safe because medical bills in Canada for those not on provincial coverage are expensive (ie. $3000/night in hospital).

Go here for a quote (just fill in the green area and you get an instant free quote from all of Canada's major insurance companies):
