One of my uncle is India to visit and he got hit by car – BADLY ( accident place – Gujarat , person originally from Montreal, QC)

Couple of fractures on legs , he has been admitted to hospital and there will be couple of surgery.

It is hit and run case- they were walking on street and some car hit then and car ran away – police case filed.

NOW THE MAIN QUESTION:
He has govt medial insurance – no private
Can he claim the expenses ?
Do they cover any cost ?
What documents they required ?


Any advise will be appreciated.

I searched on net and for ONTARIO residents - OHIP coverage :

Services Outside Canada :
For people travelling outside Canada, the ministry pays a set rate for emergency health services. Emergency health services are those given in connection with an acute, unexpected condition, illness, disease or injury that arises outside Canada and requires immediate treatment. Ambulance services are not covered. Ontario residents are encouraged to purchase supplementary insurance when traveling outside Canada as many emergency health services provided outside the country cost much more than OHIP may pay.

Some credit card companies will provide medical insurance if they bought a ticket using there credit card.
For example my credit card cover only for first 8 days after travel.

I know this will not help , but this gives an idea for some people future travel.

however, i found the link . It's not worth asking reimbursement from Quebec medical.

THEY STRONGLY RECOMMEND PRIVATE TRAVEL INSURANCE

The Régie de l'assurance maladie reimburses at pre-set rates the cost of hospital services received as a result of a sudden illness or an accident, as follows:

* a maximum of CA $100 per day for hospitalization;
* up to CA $50 per day for healthcare received at a hospital outpatient clinic.

For hemodialysis and the required medication, the Régie reimburses up to CA $220 per treatment, regardless of whether the person is hospitalized.
