Hello,
We r planing to buy a vehicle and may be through pvt sale and cld be thru kijiji. What caution should be taken when doing the transaction ? We give cheque and take a recipt (cld be hand written ?) Do we need to report this dealing to any authority ? How much tax needs to be paid ? How do we make sure it is not a stolen car or sthg ?
Thanks
even if you are buying pvt or kijiji,\
you still have to register at some REGISTRY office
As per documented price, you have to pay tax
You can check CAR history by either CARFAX or similar car history websites
You can get the vehicle checked by some mechanic, get the DriveClean certificate and also make a photocopy of the seller's license. And ofcourse, as mentioned before, carfax is a must. If the seller is not the real owner and is having a power of attorney etc., you may want to be extra careful. Also get the lien release certificate if any liens are marked on the registration.
Best thing is to hold a part of proceeds , till the transfer is effected by the Authorities ..... if the seller is not ready for this , at lest take a hand written note stating that the vehicle is free of any liens or fines / penalties as of the date of sale . Take a copy of the driver license .
The above is with respect to the title of the vehicle , the condition checking is an independent thing -- I believe we have one very good sticky post on 'private sale' of car .

I am agree with FIDO
I would not pay until the transfer is effected by the Authorities ...
If seller is not ready for this then move on .... don't put your money at risk

Thanks to all for quick response.
Q. : What is UVIP ?
Q. : Car fax is a paid service, ministry of transportation also gives same service for a fee, will that not be more reliable ?
Q. : If a car says "salvage" on ownership (meaning it was accidental and insurance co. did not want to fix it) , can that be considered to buy ? what will be pros and cons of that ?
Thanks.
