See http://www.cgitoronto.ca/contactus.htm
Office Hours : Monday-Friday
9.00 AM to 11.00 AM : - Visiting hours & Receipt of applications

Since VFS is not involved currently for PIO, there should be no VFS fee since you are going directly to Consulate. Again, since VFS is not involved they should be able to return the document same day.

I do not know about rush but they were and still are open only two hours for accepting applications and I guess there is only one window after outsourcing to VFS.

OCI registration certificate and 'U' visa sticker carry the passport number of the registered OCI. Accordingly, each time a new passport is issued to an OCI holder; it has to be captured on the registration certificate and visa. This would require re-issuance of OCI registration certificate and visa each time a new foreign passport is issued in the following cases.
Up to the completion of 20 years of age, OCI documents have to be re-issued each time a new passport is issued to the holder.
Between 21-50 years of age, there is no need to seek re-issuance of OCI documents each time a new passport is issued. However, if the applicant desires, he/she may avail the service for re-issuance of OCI documents.
After the completion of 50 years of age, OCI documents have to be re-issued once after issuance of a new passport

Thank you rajcanada. Looks like a repeat of the process for holders under 21 and over 50 (for OCI).

According to VFS, applications for PIO are accepted at CGI office now. But it is not mentioned on CGI website what time of the day they accept PIO applications? My home is far from CGI office and I want to go fully prepared for my child's PIO application as I can not afford to make two or more trips. Any CD here who has recently applied for PIO at CGI tell me regarding the following:

1. Do I still need two bank drafts, one for CGI ($240) and one for VFS ($21)?
2. What time of the day they accept applications?
3. Do they keep original documents or return them?
4. After PIO approval, do they send passport to VFS or directly to applicant via post?

We recently applied PIO for our niece at the CGI office 10 days ago and she got her card yesterday. There was not much rush and there were hardly 5 applicants before us when we reached there at 8.45 AM. One thing I did not like was that even though the time is from 9 AM, they did not start taking PIO card applications before 10 AM. However, please make sure to take all the relevant documents with photo copies otherwise the application may not be accepted the same day.

1. You need one money order or bank draft only as the VFS charges do not apply for applications made directly at CGI office, which I understand is a temporary situation till such time the VFS starts accepting the PIO card applications again.

2. The time is from 9 A.M to 11 AM. You should reach there in time and you would be fine.

3. They do an interview, check all the documents and return the original documents to you and tell you when to come back to pick up the PIO card.

4. See above. VFS is presently not involved for PIO process and you have to go back to CGI to get your PIO card and the timings for that are in the evening from 3 PM to 4 PM.

Good Luck.

Thanks Promodji for the info. Can you pls confirm whether the Draft/MO should be in favor of "Consulate General of India, Toronto" or "CGI, Toronto"?
Dont really want to take any chances with Indian Consulate!! :cuss:

Kulb - Will let you know about my experince once I put in the application next week.

I believe both are acceptable, but it would be better if it is in the favour of Consulate General of India, Toronto.

Thanks Pramod ji for your detailed explanation.

So the PIO card needs to be picked up in person. They return originals, does this include passport too? I am visiting the US soon and you know passport is a requirement to cross border. Do they call to say when PIO is ready for pickup?

Sumjo - thanks in advance, hope you have smooth sailing with your application.
