Thanks Pramod ji for your detailed explanation.
So the PIO card needs to be picked up in person. They return originals, does this include passport too? I am visiting the US soon and you know passport is a requirement to cross border. Do they call to say when PIO is ready for pickup?
Sumjo - thanks in advance, hope you have smooth sailing with your application.

They do not keep any originals and return the same to you everything after verification including your passports (both Canadian and expired Indian passport) and citizenship card. They also tell you there and then about the date of pick up of PIO card.
Hi
Picked up the PIO card on Friday PM. Everything went through smoothly. They dont keep any of your original docs, will return them after verification. The people manning the posts were also decent, not like the rude ones that I had faced before........
They need any one of the parent's docs and signature, not both.

Got PIO card for my daughter last week. On the day of the application, I reached just before 9AM, and there were hardly one or two more applicants, yet I had to wait until 10:30 when they started accepting applications (this is similar to what Pramod ji had stated earlier in this thread). But overall, the process is much simpler and faster than OCI.
Now I will be seeing them again in maybe 3 years when my daughter's passport expires, so will need to get the new one endorsed in her PIO card.
Anyone aware if the photo in PIO card needs to be updated, as PIO is valid for 15 years and child's appearance changes tremendously as years go by.
I was in the Indian consulate yesterday for a PIO card application.
I reached there around 9:50 am. There were around 50 people in side at that time and many were coming even till 11:30 am .. Remember that for one application, some times 3 or 4 people come, as well as people were there for other reasons as well such as affidavits, Pakisthan national visa etc. Also it was crowded since Oct 2 nd was a holiday.
First I stood in line and after 25 mins., a person checked my package. he checked only if I had the application form and gave me the token. He told me that I had to bring a pre paid envelope for them to send the PIO card to me which I did by going downstairs to the Post office.
I was called around 11:00 am for the vice counsel to see the papers as well as documents. I had photo copied almost all conceivabe documents (some not asked for) and had atleast 4 or 5 extra papers for the thumb impression, so that they will not send me home. They took all the photocopies that I had brought and the lady was surprised as to why I borought all the extra thumb impressions. She said it does not matter and took only one.
In my case, they did not see how the photo's came out nor if the thumb impressions were good . After the verification, I came out to the waiting hall and waiting till they called my token number. I gave my documents and they gave a receipt. All originals were handed to me on the spot. They said that they will post the PIO card in 15 days.
Comments :
This seems like a very easy process compared to OCI or OCI Misc. service as it looks like your original documents will be held by VFS/Indian Consulate for 4-6 weeks and then 1-2 weeks while being stamped.
Though the process is costly in the long run, it is simple and you need not be worrying about if they will miss the documents etc...
They are not caring much about the passport pictures as well as the thumb impressions
There is no CAD 20.21 extra charge for VFS.
hope this helps and I will be free to answer your questions.
Peace by a PD (Pucca Dravidian)
