... I am shocked to see there is nothing called SIM card sold here. It is high time somebody like reliance in India, started their business in Canada.

I think a SIM Card system makes a cell phone 'susceptible' to be used with any service provider company (un-locked). Cell phone companies will fight tooth and nail against any such idea. Some organizations (like auto insurance) here are a real organized that way to oppose such reforms and seems to have some backing as well.

As I understand, in India the SIM card is linked to the tel number and the company xyz, such as Airtel or Reliance. When u change the SIM card, you get a different tel number. I thought it was the same in Canada. I could be wrong, as I dont carry a cell phone.

I worked in the middle east too and was surprised to learn that you gotta pay for incoming, call display, international sms etc., I guess this is the way that things work around here, after two months I quickly learned to read the fine print! My two cents.

Btw, Rogers offers a SIM card option on contract tho.

For that matter canada and USA has to go along way in comparison to India and other developing countries in case of telecommunication system.

Agreed. Cell phone plans are shameful in US and Canada compared to lot of european countries and asian countries. A lot of it, I suspect, is due to powerful industry lobbying.

I got rid of my US cell phone after 11 years and am trying to find a good plan here and I am not satisfied with any so far. Will keep looking.

We have been a loyal customer of Fido since the time we landed here, never had any major issues with them, believe me, out off all the cell phone service providers (they are all thieves) that we have in Canada, Fido is the most honest thief. They at least adhere to "their" principles & ethics while ripping you off!! :p
One thing that I have observed is that instead of talking to a CSR, demand the call be trnasferred to his/her sup, or Floor Mgr, as the case may be. Dont waste your time with the frontline CSR's, they dont have much power. Always be firm without using any abusive words, and if the Mgr fails to do anything, again demand to be trnasfrd to the retention deptt. These people have a lot of power, and to meet their retention targets, they will most probably work out something for you.

I have applied this strategy to get 2 free cellphones, multiple credits and a good plan from me and wifey.
My present plan is a 2 yr contract, with a 2 free cell phones.

My plan has unlimited incoming, 1000 min E/EW, and 200 daytime mins. Plus, I get free call display, VM, no 911 fee or sys access fee. Works out to around $29 with taxes. My wife (since she doesnt use a cell phone much) has 50 incoming/outgoing with call display, without any other charges, and it works out to $10 + taxes. In total, we pay around $42 a month for the 2 phones.

Well, we are happy with the present setup. But again, took a lot of yakking over the phone with retention deptt, before all these were worked out.

We have taken FIDO twe o year plan and we find that, we are being cheated out of our money because being a new immigrant, my husband was unware of this and he committed to two year plan and now we are paying monthly $25 for 100 mts outgoing and paying additional $12, we have made incoming free since he is getting telephone interview. But to our shock, though we are not using any outgoing and incoming because he is attending co-op, where he is not allowed to take calls, unless it is emergency., we are receiving bills of around $80 adn $100 per month. When we asked FIDO to cancel our plan and we don't wish to continue with them, they are asking us to pay $400 for a mobile which is not worth more than $100. could you all please guide us how to handle this and which is best plan in the market.

In UAE, we had to pay for SIM card for a year say aed 100 and they used to give incoming free for a year and outgoing pay as you go. Do we have such scheme in canada, if so, please guide us.

thanks in advance. eagerly awaiting your help.

Welcome to the Immigrant unfriendly land.

Please stop posting your toxic negative garbage here. New immigrants or others who are looking for genuine advice dont need your "Helpful" words. Just because you experience one thing doesnt make it the reality for everyone else.
No one is telling you to stay in Canada. If you dont like it please do us a favour and LEAVE.

Finally. Im sorry you got yourself fired from your job. However. Please DO NOT continue to insult MY country.

But what TK is saying is correct to an extent ..... I ve had so many issues with Rogers and Bell in which I ve pointed out their mistakes .. that every time I do so I wonder what would have happened had I not looked deeper .....

2 days back at a Dollar Store , the cashier charged me 4$ for 4 pieces which were meant to be for 25c each .... I got it corrected .

TK is right in a way - New Immigrants should read every line in the contracts and agreements and bills because alot of things here are a rip off ....

TK is right in another way by advising to get all the add on features removed ...

I think we all post our opinion here on our experience and everyone is entitled to that . Highlighting the deficiencies does not necassarily amount to 'insulting' .

To the OP -- get all frills removed and switch to a basic plan..

How can you be so sure -- maybe they do .... I ve found TK to be giving some good information which is not commonly known like EI / Second Career etc .

Again how can you be so sure that another immigrant may not have the same experience ... Better left to the readers to excercise discretion ...
