Any idea what kind of cell phone can be purchased from here (Canada) that will work in India as well?
I think it is some chip or something ....
One of my friend In India is asking me to bring one for him from Canada but I am not where to start.
Please advise.

Before it used to be GSM phone but now in India,CDMA/TDMA technologies are also in the market. But I would still buy GSM as it is better. One thing you will have to keep in mind that the phone should not be network locked otherwise it will not work anywhere. There are people in the market who may charge you some thing like $25-30 and will unlock the phone.
So, it will be unlocked GSM phone.
BTW, in India, there are much better phones available than in Canada.

I am using Motorola V66 GSM Trimode which I have also used in India by using local SIM card. what u need is an unlocked GSM phone with Trimode. but i agree, you will get good phones in India than in Canada since the electronic market is much agressive in Singapore/Hongkong and the latest models are launched first in Asia than in North America.

it will be very costly to buy a GSM phone here. instead, try buying in Dubai if you have a stop-over there. also these days, in india, they are getting new models and slightly cheaper than here. first check the price of that model in india before buying here.

i tried to buy a GSM phone here. that sales guy offered to get it unlocked by his "friend" (unofficial ofcourse!) for some real good price. i dont know if i can trust him.. so did not buy it. unless you get some "deal" like that, it will be a costly purchase here.

My friend is interested in a Camera Phone and was saying that it is more like 20000.00 there these days.
Looks like it is less than 10000 here but then there are some hassles like getting it unlocked.
i dont think camera phone is still available in india for 10000.00

My suggestion is if you are getting the mobile phone with international warranty then only you buy otherwise better to buy from India only.
