If you have tri Band GSM phone you can use them in India by changing SIM card.
You need to do following things
(1) Call up your Wireless company code in Canada and ask them whether your cell phone is unlocked so that you can make call even from India.Normally the process is simple so either they will tell you about the process or they will unlock your set themselves
(2) Keep your Canadian SIM card in safe place and follow the corret procss to change the SIM card.In india it is better to ask the Dealer to change the SIM card for you
(3)Once u are back you simply insert your Canadian wireless company SIM card

In India a triband GSM cell phone will work.
If your cell phone is not unlocked (which it wont be) and if the operator asks you for 30 $ do a google search as there is website where u can do this unlocking yourself .(I am not able to recall the site rightnow but have unlocked my cell phone and i have the software as well)
smart way of using ur cell would be tell your relatives to but a sim before u land with a Rs1200 -1500 and use the roaming service instaed of buying seperate sims for the various cities you gonna visit and but the sim from the city where u gonna stay the most.
if anything else is needed send me a email.
