thanks.

Certainly very helpful information. Thanks.

I have always wondered about the silly questions that HR people ask. Consider the information that provided. Now assume that 5 CDs get the call for interview. Assume further that all CDs have prepared themselves well by reading the information you have provided. My guess is that most will give the same kind of replies. How HR person asking the question would judge a person?

I was told that the interviewer usually forms opinion on first minute and that is what has bugged me all the time.

In India , in my tenure of 16 years, I had 5 different jobs and was always asked technical questions. However here soft skills ONLY matter. In canada, in 10 years I had 5 different jobs and always was asked questions on soft skills. Once you have a designation, it is assumed that you can perform the job effectively.

Well, I do not subscribe to that philosophy. In my last job in accounting as a manager, I recruited 6 persons (1 Chinese, 1 Pakistani and 4 Indians, no white guy as none could not pass the test) in 5 years and each time I gave Excel test and accounting test (questions were drafted by me) and gave the candidates 45 minutes to solve the problems and I would ask further soft skill questions only if the candidate has crossed the bar of passing the test with minimum 65%.

I had a HUGE difference of opinion with my VP -HR as none the candidates recommended by him ever passed the test. The matter had escalated to the owner of company but I could prevail. It has been my experience that HR people are mostly dumb and have little knowledge of the job requirements and that is the main cause of technically weak people getting the job.

Please note that I am not trying here to say that soft skills are not important or that one should not master soft skill questions. In Canada, whether one likes or not, soft skill test and presentation skills are the only important things and one should be well prepared for that.

I agree with you on this one 100 %.
I am taking some HR courses in a local college and also SAP HR and I find that the role of a HR manager is a very general one. All the people in my class (except me) work in HR and none are very bright. The subject is also a one liner subject. I am given the inside workings of a HR and with the jobs that they need to do, they need to work only 15 mins. of a day. To spend the rest of the time, they do stuff like Job Description, Job analysis, Job reporting, Org. Planning, Sucession planning, Training and development which is either redundant or common sense.
Can anyone think of a 12 grade pass or a Univ. graduate doing all stuff like job description of an Engineer which they do by observing the person at work or copying from staffing firms or the internet.
However, I am taught to see HR as one of the most important dept. in any company and that we have to behave in such a way that staff are afraid of us and management are very of us due to our hard work. No wonder, very few VM's occupy this field.
I am also taught that once we get a bunch of resumes, we are free to set our own filtering system and that the Govt. has no control of who we hire or what we set as standard for hire. We only have to be concerned about Human rights violation or discrimination in the advt. that we provide, like saying in tha advt. that only men need apply etc.. But then when the application comes, we are free to set our own standards of filtering and hire whom we want.

Peace by a PD (Pucca Dravidan)
