The thing with this setup is that you get only Point-to-Point Calls. You cant really make unlimited calls to any other 'house'
25 USD gives you approx 6 hours of talk time to India. If you need more than that to ONE number - it works out beautifully.

We will find a way or we will make one

If you are considering sending the VOIP adaptor to India, G3 Telecom is better than Vonage. They charge $10/month and I know quite a few people who have signed up and are really happy.

I have been using Sunrocket for the last 2 years, they give only US based numbers, but the plan offers unlimited calling to US and Canada, plus $3 bucks of long distance credit to anywhere in the world per month.
It beats the pants out of all. They have tons of other features included and until recently they were giving a second incoming phone number for free too.
There are no contracts, no shipping charge to send the VOIP box and no extra charge for VOIP box. All this for US$ 199/year. Plus they frequently give out buy one year and get one year free !!
Now tell me who can beat $8 bucks per month for unlimited calling to anywhere in US and Canada !!
So if you have anyone in US, get the box shipped to there address and then tell them to ship it to you as a gift. You can get things by courier to Canada, as long as it's a gift and is worth less than C$60, which in this case it would, as it's easy for customs to believe that a VOIP box is like a router and they know routers don't cost more than $60 bucks.
I have sent two of these to India and you just need to get a BSNL High speed connection of Rs. 500 per month(plus Rs. 60 bucks for modem rental) and you have unlimited calling to India.
Your parents don't need to computer literate, once the setup is done by someone. They just need to know how to power it on in sequence (modem first, voip box after a minute or two).
And as for concerns about you being able to dial to this one number only...here's a solution...pay $30 bucks or so at Staples and you can get a corded 2 line phone with capability to do conferencing between the two lines. So just plug one line from the VOIP box into it and another one from the local BSNL phone line and you can then get your folks in India to dial you into other numbers in India. I have used this only on one occasion and the voice was getting little choppy, but it should work if you are patient, as it is still using the same internet bandwith as a one phone call, but BSNL being Govt, getting true experience of high speed internet where you can use the phone plus talk, is little difficult.
