Also, the regulations vary from state to state (regarding the definition of "residency", how many days you have to register, whether you even need to register or not, etc.)
Check the DMV website for the state you are moving to.

If so, then the best strategy is to change the car registration to the state in the US where you will be living, and get US insurance.
Of course, it is a bonus that insurance will most likely be cheaper in the US.
