Hi,
I was an Indian citizen. I just got my Citizenship card and Certificate. The officials took my PR card. (Dont know whether they are allowed to take the PR card or i forgot to take it? ) I am just curious to know
1. What are the next steps that I need to follow in order to retain my Indian status . (Can you mention all the procedure in details along woth timeline and cost anything like that)
2. Can I use my existing Indian passport in India for signing up with Indian Financial institutions such as Banks, Brokers or investment firms or other Babu type organizations where we used to dump on their head our Passport / Pan copies
3. What is the use of my existing Indian passport (Other than submitting for horrible surrender fees?)?

Sahi gyan hee Canada mein aapko aapka haq dila sakta hai.

Also don't forget to enjoy your Canadian citizenship, if there is such a thing! You have three years to return your Indian passport to the nearest Indian Mission and have it canceled or returned (don't know which). If you use Indian passport for travel (visa and such), the Indian Embassy will assess penalty. You may have to get Canadian passport and travel with it, leaving your Indian passport out of sight or behind.
Thanks cdn_dude and GlobalIndian. Your response is much appreciated

I like ur attitude.. did u complain at the horrible landing fees and processing fees for canadian PR..
Get real dude every country charges for such services, when india charges it is a crime, when other countries charge it is ok..
In the past all the Indian govn services provided no service and u had to bribe.. now things are getting done sooner by paying legal fees.. You decide which is better

@ dudewheresmycar.
(Assuming you are NRI ). I was lucky to receive a part of my Canadian PR process fee since the government made a decision to refund some fees for applications submitted between 2005 - 2007. That was a fair fee I would say since they process, pay salaries of commission, lease, officers in Canadian dollar and as per labor standards.
Well, If you see till now, in India nothing has changed since it was in 1947. Many laws and policies of colonial rule still exists. The only thing which changed in India is increase in Population, Poverty, Red Tapism, freak-in bureaucracy and Outsourcing of consulting and Mafia deeds. The Pandu (Police constable) Who was asking as Bribe Rs.10 in 1947, Rs100 in 1990s is now (2010) asking Rs.1000 for any misdemeanor crime. I experienced it couple of months back when I was there in the same country. The attitude of Government is the same dude. I didnt like those attitude and they are not going to change. Its a cyclic problem. Gandhi couldn't change it then who am i going to change it?
If you read US / Canadian newspapers, you might be aware that there was a satyagrah in US outside Indian consultates for this "horrible surrender fees". Voice of Indians outside India are listened than Indians in India. And I am pretty sure that they are going to consider changing the "horrible surrender fees". It would not be surprising when some Babu changes during election time (India is known for providing benefits to public only during election time )
Btw..nexti time when you go to Taj Mahal or any prominent tourist spot and say you are a foreigner..look how they will discriminate you in admission fees...and then you will realize my above text.

People who make a min of 1800$ pm complain about 200$ once in a life time surrender fees...
BTW I am a canadian and i dont think the 200 fees is excessive.. I think getting a OCI is as much a privileged as getting a canadian pr or citizenship..
For majority of the people in the satyagraha it is less than a days salary, if u consider the average income of indian in usa and canada at 60k.
Atleast now we dont have to get a visitor visa again and again like in the past..
I guess everyone wants a free cake..
As far as ur argument about foreigners being charged more .. this is quiet common in other countries too.. i was travelling in TN in a packaged tour and a american was travelling with us.. i asked her do u get annoyed with the way we charge more to travellers and she was saying this is common in europe as well..
Changing a 3rd world country take years
I can see the positive changes that are taking place,
if u cant see them then all i can say is u have selective vision..
