I posted that comment from my own personal experience. You will never be at ease or feel comfortable in this country unless you treat as if it was your own and this is where you are going to live for your entire life. Agree that it is easier said then done. The whole point was not about media or entertainment, but about getting a different perspective on life. (BTW, what is "SPRWOD"?)

Did you get meaningful replies here?

This is "canadian" culture. Learn from this.

What replies did one expect? That everything is bad in Canada and everything is good in India? It takes a long time to adjust in this country, not just few months. Everybody has its own mindset/biases and it takes a while to change those mindsets. I believe that when you get a good job (good pay and job satisfaction), it will be easier to adjust in this great white north.

I am a vegetarian and have survived here - even in business trips, Most of the big chain restaurants across GTA and in Ontario now know that some of the patrons have specific food habits and have changed their menus or are willing to accommodate.

Not true unless you don't mind having the stir fried chicken rice w/o the chicken ..... and it would still be cooked in lard , so you don't have a choice really .

Lived in Halifax ... Unlike the GTA the only so called veggie eating out choices we had were French Fries and Pizza and .... would not wish to survive on that ...

My q was more towards how do we maintain our kids to be veg ... when they would go to B Day parties , get togethers .... how can we ensure that they do not take non veg ??

Also how does one cope when teenage children go on dates ?

I agree with Meghal after a few years you get used to it ..... just like you get used to an amputated arm ..... it pains initially but then you get used to it ............ it does not mean that you have Indian culture here .... just the essence .. and you compromise on that in the so called greater interests of your kids ......

Dude ... it takes a tough person to make a decision and stick by it ....... you know what you would and won't get in Canada and like wise in India .... Sit down after a couple of years , create the lists of pros and conses and decide ....... once done , remember why you made that decision and abide by it ....

We have had members in the past who have returned after spending years in Canada ....... although they stop visiting CD some times later ... may be they get what they longed for on CD !!

Just wished to add ... GTA and Vancouver are perhaps the best it gets for a desi loving population ....

I did immigrate by myself 18 years ago and I do have a child growing up. That doesn't mean I would start talking and thinking like you. To me Canada and the US is home because I have lived in both the countries extensively. I enjoy everything these two countries offer me. It all comes down to how capable and willing you are to assimilate and adapt.

If immigrating is a trauma as you have put it, why did you come to Canada? Why did you voluntarily put yourself in a position that would cause distress to you and your family?

In my view point we (indians) are at advantage after immigrating, have a clear cut choice to adapt to best of both side values. But since we play blind to this advantage , many of my country mates sulk!.

Behaviour - We were tought honesty & integrity in India, we can practice same here encouragingly though in India at times we get sucked into dishonest system, do things against our integral wishes.

Food - Everything , everything is available here , its a matter of finding right places to get them.

Kids - Do not expect much from them, they are Canadians. Even if you take them to India every year, speak only hindi/mother language in house, they will always have peer pressure to live like fellow canadian kids...you cannot avoid that. Change your thought process.

Cleanliness - Self explanatory :-). I do not want to bash India.

Clothes - No body stops it here but clothes is to comfort (and weather). Sari , dhoti does not fit here, sorry!.

Festivals - Well, go to temples, gurudwaras on that day, you will feel it !

Drinking, Sex, - Its all abt personal control. I like them so very much , outside India you have more opportunities to enjoy them, I do not miss India for these reasons.

Religion - Hmm..no comments I hate this topic.

Relatives - Until unless you live in village back home , we meet relatives in marriages or functions, you can do that same now also if enough motivated.

Friends - Make new ones here, facebook, emails will keep you in contact (more than ever) with ones back home.

Interactions, openness - Gah , which other country will give you opportunity to interact with so many cultural backgrounds, if you are not comfortable , start slowly, interact with fellow indians, learn from them the way of interactions with natives and move on...it is a slow process.

Work culture - 8 hrs means 8 hrs in Canada, Companies are receptive to personal choices, I agree you need to improve your comm/presentation skills here but thats given professionally. Jobs are difficult to find in India as well. you may feel ashamed to do survival jobs in India but will do here without much mental inhibition.

Entertainment - Highly subjective !, though movies , music , Tv serials, birthday parties, picnic, weekend outings, clubbings can be done here as well.

Where is the struggle? - in minds I am sure!

Btw i appreciate the orginator of this post, the question is right on dot, practical and thought provoking.

well people afraid to talk these issues , this forum allowed me to initiate and took up this challenge. some of the sarcastic comments helped all of us to realize the issue exists and it is how you look into it - half full glass theory. As someone commented on the choice of coming to Canada, most of us don't regret coming here and feels proud to be Canadian , may be little junior( only 10yrs ) to most 18 yrs plus.most of us discussed about the social acceptance - yes truly pointed out we all love to socialize and internet is one of these.
Are we not forgetting the II part. FINANCE -Conquering money and be healthy is another part of this topic . Then people start judging you with - Car ( new /old,BMW,Mrcds..Van Dodge or Rav or CRV ...) House(condo, townhouse, bungalow or farm house,cottage..... ),if own business or jobs ( office or factory, trucking ,taxi... ),kids school ( IB,Leadership,AP,French immrgnt...College or University which one),Spouse (working and where ....)

While you have to aspire to become financially highly capable, the last thing you need to think is what people think about you or how they judge you. You have a choice to "please" the society with your expensive possessions and drive yourself to bankruptcy or do things within your comfort level and grow financially well.

This is typical south asian stuff - comparison !! but you are right once again in context of todays canada..we are polluting environment of this country as well by bringing these thoughts from our native lands. Alas those thoughts are inculcatated in us by our close knit society back home. its like tattoo on the souls.

The best solution is to ignore what others think and do whatever keeps you comfortably afloat, financially and health wise. Else strive hard, run along with the rats, earn heavily, flaunt and then be happy.
