My Toyota is now about 4 yrs old, had bought it new, have driven it only for about 55k, car is running absolutely fine, with no problems whatsoever. Been doing regular maintenance like oil change every 8k kms, etc.

My service manual says to replace transmission fluid every 4yrs/60k kms, is that an absolute must, or can I defer it? The dealer, when asked, advised me to do fluid change and wheel balancing, along with oil change. I am sure the dealer is trying to up sell me stuff that is not even required.

I would appreciate feedback from Toyota owners regarding this.

If I were you , I would have defer it till 75K. Dealers allways rip off.

Transmission fluid exchange at 60K is a good suggestion and it should be followed every 60K. But instead of doing at dealer, you can buy the same fluid and have your preferred mechanic do it for you - it really is very straight forward job. Never go for Transmission service (unless there is an issue), just simple fluid exchange. You can order the required quantity of fluid from Toyota dealership parts department - to ensure quality. Shop around for prices, sometimes they vary a few dollars from dealer to dealer.

There is a recommendation for a reliable mechanic in the driving forum by BL and I have used him several times - he is definitely recommended.

For the first time, 60k is good since it helps flush away all the grit that might have built up during initial wear and tear. After that, you may prolong for more than 60k. Also, going to the dealer does not guarantee anything better other than higher $. Items have been standardized so very well these days, you can get comparable quality from almost anywhere.

IMO,

its due now and better do it........as mentioned by others if you want to save some $$ than buy the Trans oil from Toyota Dealer.

B'cos grade of oil and quality of oil making big difference.....Toyota have their own standard and specification, so buy the oil from them and do it outside if you want.

Note: Do not purchase the oil from CT, Walmart or others outsiders.......Better buy good quality oil and keep you tranny in good shape...

Most of the car it is suggested to do tran. fluid every 3 years, after 3 years

I had once taken it to dealer who did a drain & fill. Thereafter i realized it was not fully empty before refill.

Mr. Lube does a complete Flush out and refill right before our eyes and i found that to be much better than a drain & fill

We know of Two speed transmissions and currently they have gone upwards of eight to provide very high efficiencies. Which means we get more miles to the gallons. Technology was there, but the strength of materials limited it in increasing the number of gear changes.
