People close to me pay around Rs. 500 a month for play school and Rs. 1000 a month on fees for grade 2.
In best schools this may be Rs. 2000 a month and Rs. 5000 a month respectively for very high quality of educations.
Esp. in Tamil nadu, schools are plenty and cost of education is down. Bus fees for the whole month is in the range of Rs.400 to Rs 800 (18 $ to 36$).
Hope you are aware that salaries have gone up. EVen a local labourer gers Rs. 400 at the min. for a day's work (unskilled)
Peace

the rates depend on place to place. May be such rates in second tir city . No way on first tire araes like banglore, gurgaon.

I remeber 6-7 year back. The rate in gurgoan was 1000 for play school amd 4 to 5000 for dps or any good school per month. I had only one child at that time in playschool. I just ran away form such a stressful life and take refuge in UK. Execellent school that too free.
Thourgh in canada , schools are okay but I am toying with idea to get my children in private school once they reach middle class level

I am guessing that all of you are talking in the air about Indian school rates.
Agreed that the best schools rate will be more as more and more people are generally rich here (not the $ 15 per hour rates as in Canada) and can afford to pay the school fees.

People are not aware that there are Govt. schools in India which are totally free.

Agreed that the work load is more in schools here but then it prepares you better than the cdn. / american kids. You can choose to study less (esp. kids of OCI's as the children can always study in their citizenship country at a later date). Sat./Sunday is anyways holiday for the students.

School fees is not as high as you guys think. Donation (if any) is a one time affair. Even if it is 1 lakh, it is peanuts for the person when a plot of land is around 1 crore in India, in a tier 1 city (not a metro).
Kumar M can expand on this further.

Peace

One of my classmate who studied in a government school - he was a district topper in 10th. one of the local IIT coaching center saw his talent and gave him free coaching and he made it into IIT

You can pay the highest fees and get the kid into the best school, but then the kid should have the talent too

I used to feel the same way initially but then a bright kid would make it no matter when he / she is in. The question is about the average kid, an average kid if he/she moves into an environment which is a hotbed to nurture the skills, the results are very promising.

I have very personal experience from this and since I strongly believe a better environment helps when the natural talent isn't there.

This could be the reason many parents strive to put their kids in private schools, it is not just for a show-off cause but with an expectation that the environment would influence positively.

Rules have changed these days.
Study in a Govt. school. Study a IT course. After some years , you will get a nice salary in India or elsewhere.

Well, you could be fighting your epic saga of getting straight with IT professionals, but the glamor was long gone due to supply ( at least in India now).

Do you have any idea how many colleges in Tamil Nadu alone churning out B.Tech (Comp. Sci),
B.E (Comp Sci),
B.Sc.., (Comp Sci)
B.C.A.
M.Sc.., (Comp Sci)
M.S IT (Comp Sci)
M.C.A.

Once you have a ballpark figure, we could discuss about this.

TK, IT is not these days what it used to be. I am sure there are many IT newcomers in Canada who have to struggle as well. I myself had to endure low paying jobs for 2 years before embarking upon my first break in my field of IT. So, your ever long playing trumpet of 'except IT and Finance' doesn't hold true anymore.

If you compare apples to apples vis-a-vis govt. Education in India and Public schooling in Canada then the differences are manyfold. One with respect to the overall personality developement, which is lacking in its core in Indian context. Two, an average student has to struggle really hard to get into any reputable institution. You take it or leave it but that is the truth. Coming from someone who had been in the system for 28 long years.

So, let's see your analogy of the fees. In metros, you would hardly come across any family that doesn't send their kid in private school, with hugh donations, that too for nursery school. Not eveyone in Metros are earning lakhs, so you can really see the pressures and frustrations for the parents in similar situations.

If you feel that Indian metro schools are highly affordable, then my dear friend you are living in a fools's paradise. Affordable, yes for the MNC professionals, but a rip off for an average household. Furthermore, Govt. Schools have long lost the lusture.
