I work in IT.
58.5K is very low for a PM in a MidSize or a Large IT Firm. I am guessing it is one if those because typically midsize-large firms ususally use workpermits.
Salary of a Real PM is in the 75 - 100K range.

Now if you are here to save money rent a basement and travel TTC eat outside occasionally and you can live in <1500month easy.

If you want a good life (posh 1BHK apt), driving around, pubs night clubs you will spend most of ur 3K salary..

I am new to this forum and have gone thru various topics and I really appreciate time taken by all members to answer queries of new comers.

I will be highly appreciate answer/help on following queries.
I will be traveling to Markham (Ontario) on an assignment for 2 years along with the family (wife & kid). I am offered total salary of 58.5 K per year. So I would like to know:
- if this salary is comparable with in the industry? I will be working as Project Manager in a IT company (got 8+ years of IT exp)
- Approximately how much will be total taxes?
- After 2 years, can I get the amount deducted for EI and CPP?
- What will be monthly expenses including food, travelling, rented accommodation (1 BHK), misc expenses? I am pure vegetarian and will use local transportation for traveling

Thanks in advance and waiting for your early reply as I have to give decision on this offer.

Regards,
Guru

Objectively speaking, $58K is "extremely low". Project Managers I work with earn $80K+ and they have the same experience as you do i.e., 8+ years.

TK,

Are you sure that education is free for families on work permit?

Yes, the school is free, TK is correct.

"CPP and EI contributions are mandatory - irrespective of your immigration status. But EI and CPP can be claimed only by people who are PRs and Cdn citizens. Sounds unfair, but it's the bitter truth."

Thanks cdn_dude, this is really bitter, one is paying for something which one will never get to use or get back. Being on CD is really giving me eye openers on Canada.

Guys, please don't bash Canada just for the sake of it.
It's the same way in the US with Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment Benefits and other "premiums".
To boot, US Social Security works out more expensive than Canadian CPP.
I bet if you were getting a comparable job in the US for 58.5K USD, you would not have been complaining about SS, EI and Medicare.

Why this discrimination then?

I am not saying that it is right or wrong.
But if Work Visa Holder is unhappy about the fact that Government is forcing to contribute for CPP & EI - he/she can go back & reject the offer.

Every Country/Individual has a right to think of Own Interest. What's wrong in it? Canadian Government will use that contribution to Help fellow Canadian Citizen (How do you feel about that?).

To start with, you seldom get "comparable job" (like the one original poster has) in the US for $58.5K. These jobs are much highly paid in the United States.
