Hi All,
I'm about to get into discussions with HR about offer details. Can you please provide some insights, that apart from salary, what things should normally be part of package / offer in Canada, specially for an expat.

Specifically,
Medical?
notice period?
Any assistance with PR application?
As I'll moving from different country,
relocation assistance?
any temp. housing arrangement, if yes, how long is minimum expected?
My wife will join me as well, anything employer can do to make it "easier" to obtain visa for her.

As always, thanks for your help.

1. Bonus/stock options/stock awards/stock purchase plan etc. etc. Not sure if this is part of your package or 150K is just base.

2. Flex hours (flexible working hours) and WFH (work from home) option?

3. Cell phone + home connectivity reimbursement (if you're expected to sometimes work or attend meetings from home)

4. Vacation allowance - Standard is 3 weeks, can be negotiated higher in some cases. I would not push too hard on this though.

5. RRSP match program (company matches your RRSP - retirement program - contribution, helping you save for retirement)

6. Relocation program that would include temp. housing, assistance in finding your own place and as well car allowance initially

Note that the above are not must-haves and not very commonly provided in Canada, so you've got to negotiate carefully (without annoying the other party) and as well know when to let go.

Good luck!

One more thing. Usually, there isn't much negotiating on medical coverage, the company has a central program that applies to everyone. If this is a reputed company, I would not worry about it too much because they'll have decent coverage. You can find out the details though.

You can ask them about PR application support, however I would not bother about "help in getting wife work visa", this is not their responsibility and generally outside of your negotiation scope. You can worry about this once you get here.

The points being mentioned here are generally part of company policy which HR will not change for an individual ;
Things like RRSP matchup, stock options will be policy based. Flex hours, cell phone in consulting firms are project based. There is no point discussing that since you will get standard answers.

Generally they put employee benefits booklet on their website, go through it to get an idea about medical, dental, life/disability insurance. They will not change it for you as it is service provider based. they will ask you to take one of the option SP is offering.

you can discuss Vacation allowance and ask for additional week. It will be relevant in your case since you would like to go to India. HR may buy it for you. They may answer that as per co. policy once you put in some years in the company your vac allowance is increased. you will have to nod to it then :-).

Notice period in this part of the world is much lesser (2 weeks generally) than in India where it is 2-3 months. you can still ask abt it.

Do not ask obvious question like PR assistance , unlike in US , PR in Canada is not employer attached, you an apply yourself after couple years of working here. Also if you are on work permit your wife will be allowed to accompany.

You can ask about Relocation bonus or joining bonus or assistance during initial 15-30 days period and trigger a discussion around it.

Also you will get some hidden allowances like group policy discounts on life, home & auto insurance ( when i came new to canada, with g2 license and without credit history insurance companies offered me not below 500-700 as insurance, once I joined the company and took the group insurance it got reduced to 360 intially and then 260..so this additional 2000CAD got added to company provided benefit for me)

Also clarify the base salary amount with them if it is 150k or does it include performance bonus.

Btw I am amazed that a consulting firm is offering such a rate for permanent position, you got a good deal if that is true, must be project based hiring. Thats kind of director level pay !!

Believe it or not, even though being the biggest country in the world, office parking spots in Canada are scarce and not free. Not sure which city and neighborhood your work location is, it gets as low as $20/month to $500/month. Downtown locations are the worst. My 2 cents, ask for your parking covered by the employer, no matter what, as long as you stay with them.

it is indeed an important cost factor But again chances are high that it will be company policy (based on seniority at times) or client project reimbursement based that parking cost is paid back.

I really wonder if it will put up a good impression to discuss parking cost during salary negotiation. ;-) For sure not a relevant point for a consulting person who do not stay with one project or client for long time. sometimes you work in downtown area other times you are in open suburbs. Generally client pays the difference of km value from your regular office to client site.

then comes the discussion of paying highway toll ! though most of the projects reimburse the toll.

Again ... 150k in hand (double of what is being earned today in hongkong) I'll discuss nothing and give them joining date straight away. :D
