Hi All,
I had applied for my Mother-in-law's visa in December and she received the Visa for 2 years (since her passport was only valid for 2 years). At that time, there was no requirment for producing Canadian Insurance for the visa.
She has been already in canada for one year earlier. I think she got her visa in the Super visa scheme.
My questions..I am planning to get her next month here.
1) Do they ask for Insurance in the airport when she is getting inside.
2) Do I need to get a 100k insurance..I am planning to get a 50K or 25K insurance for her from a Canadian company here.
Looking forward for some inputs in this.
Cheers,
MeraCanada..
If your mom was issued a super visa then she would be required to have proof of $100,000 insurance when she arrives in Canada, to show the border immigration officer.
Usually though, the super visa application requires the policy to be purchased and submitted before being issued. It is possible that she has a multi-entry visa (no proof of insurance was required), and because she only had two years left on the passport, it was only issued for two years (so it looks like it could be a super visa). It sounds like you need to ask her for clarification, by looking in the passport.
To look at the various options for travel insurance you should get a comparable quote (free online) from a comparable quote engine like the one at BestQuote Travel Insurance Agency: http://www.bestquotetravelinsurance.ca/parent-and-grandparent-super-visa-health-insurance
Simply fill in the quote request form in green on the lefthand side, and you'll see multiple different policy options from Canada's major travel insurance providers.
I wouldn't recommend having any amount less than $50,000 because even a minor medical issue that requires surgery and a few days in the hospital can cost more than $25,000. Hospitalization in Canada is not cheap!

I doubt if it is a super visa if you never bought an insurance policy because from the word go (01 Dec onwards) , the super visa package was implemented with 100k advanced insurance as primary component of it. There were changes pertaining to medicals added later, when the medicals can be done (before submitting application or during the process etc.). Pls check.
Having said that super or multiple , having an insurance from Canadian company is in your own interest, as rightly mentioned above any medical condition occurring while in Canada can be expensive. the flexibility you get with multiple entry visa is you do not have to mandatorily take expensive 100k insurance policy for 365 days period paid at outset , you can go for lesser, flexible premiums.
I heard they do check if the person has a policy at the airport from time to time, and worst case scenario they can send parents back to home country.
If it is your mom's second visit you can just get a policy for less than a year, just for a duration of her stay, and $50,000 coverage.
It is a requirement to be insured by a Canadian company, but there's always way to find affordable prices- check out some rate calculators:
