Scarborough is not Iraq and no website can portray correct situation , it rather can scare the readers for no reason.
Reading such things cannot be new immigrant's priority. Job and other settlement issues are big enough to keep them busy for next year or so. I would say it is unnecessary to feed in such info here. ( Though I understand the good intention behind placing the info by FH & TK)

If I am guessing it right, Lalitha and her husband are coming to SB to stay with relatives (no choice here ). They will see them-self and listen from near dears whom they should believe more.

I think idea being sought is about search for job and ease of it not crime data. Crime report data belongs to all localities. There are lakhs of people living in these area for decades without issues and that is the larger truth than sporadic incidents which occur in all parts of world.

Scarborough is good for public transit and thats important to move around in GTA without car.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions...
Access to Public transportation would be the top priority as i see from your opinions.
I was just searching for the walk score & transit score for some different areas and Sherborne seems to have very very high scores, but the availability and rent needs to be looked into.
Since the apartments have to be taken on a yearly lease I wanted to know the proximity to our workplaces if we land up jobs in our field. Initially, the place of stay may not matter much but definitely once we start commuting to work it will be a very important aspect. TK's comments had given a fair idea of the industries in different areas, i will look into the places accordingly.

Could you provide details on the walk score & transit score and the source of that info. I'm assuming you mean Sherbourne Street, which stretching from downtown to approx. midtown.

There are situations where you get a lease for less than a year. The other option is basements.

Keep in mind the average commuting time by transit is approx. an hour from home to work. So don't think of living as close (to downtown) as possible.

Since you have a 2-year old, schooling is not a deciding factor at the moment.

Here's the link : http://www.walkscore.com/score/201-sherbourne-st-toronto-on-canada.

Rent also looks OK. Hope i'm searching correctly!

One more question came up - Is it necessary to go for a 2BR as we are 3 people? Can a studio apartment be rented?
I'm not inclined to go for a basement as of now, but who knows depending on the financial situation I may opt for it if nothing works out for us.

Lalitha:
Just since you are looking in the Sherborne area, please be informed that parts of the area are Middle eastern ghetto’s. There are a lot of apartments for rent (but mostly on a 1 year lease) and many in those areas are a bit run down but the advantage is the low rent and easy accessibility.
If you donot mind the people on welfare / small time drug addicts loitering the streets, you could stay in that area (I know that some well educated professionals are a bit skeptical about those areas). Otherwise a decent area is Islington subway which also good for immigrants. Mabelle ave. apartments are an instant hit with professional immigrants and the area is a safe place.
Dundas and Hurontario area of Mississauga is best avoided as a lot of blacks / unsafe for gold ornament situation exists here though it is a famous visiting place for desi’s. Moving north to Square 1 area/ Hurontario & 403 is a good bet.
If you donot want a 1 year lease (as is a norm in all good apartments), then you will have to find a basement to live (in the area that you prefer to live). You can negotiate with the basement owners.
Also google Sheridan college residences. One such is located in Hurontario / steels area. I think the rent per month is around $ 1100 and you have 2 bedrooms ,1 toilet and a big dining/kitchenette. Kitchen is common. Phone is free.
If you are thinking of coming at this time, it is a very bad idea as the snow / cold is a turn off. April is a good time to come. Canada does not function in the month of December. January is a time when hiring decisions take place and so if you must come, come in Jan 2013.
Since I like in South India, you can PM me your phone number , should you wish to talk further about Canada and how to make the best use of Canada as a new comer.

Peace
