Hi CD's,
Its been a longtime since i posted. Hope all are doing good and preparing for winter!
We are planning to land in Toronto on Feb 24th 2013.
Initially for 2-3 days planning to stay at our relatives in Scarborough.
I'm a mechanical engineer & my husband is in software testing. We have a 2 yr old daughter.
Which place would be the best to stay for both of us to go job hunting? Would Mississauga be the best place for both of us? Or can we still stay at Scarborough?
I would not recommend scarborough at all.
Scarborough has too many Sri Lankans (doing labour jobs) and Gujju's (major occupation unknown).
I know some ghetto's in Serborne where apartment rents are very competetitive but access to a wider catchment area is possible.
Also would recomend areas near Islington subway station which can lead you to jobs in Toronto, Etobicoke and east sides of mississauga at ease.
Mississauga has a lot of office positions available (majorly non IT) as lot of industries are available there.
Younge-Finch area has a small concentration of IT jobs.
Highways 401 and 404 intersection area is full of Middle eastern people ghetto's but it is a good place to find decent jobs as lot of industries are also there.
Investment in a Car at the earliest will be good as most of the jobs available are outside the Toronto / Mississauga areas like vaughan, Markham etc.. where bus connectivity may not be at the best but a recent immigrant can always manage.
Bottom line avoid Scarborough.

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
I have lived near Kennedy (scarborough) and never encountered any problem. It is better to stay close to Srilankans (who are more like our people)then living in a black neighborhood. Scarborough is good with the transit and you cannot compare Sauga anywhere close. Downtown is expensive and more crime .For a new immigrant I would say Scarborough is good(not the internal Scarborough which is beyond Kingston Rd)
Anyways Anything could happen if you are at the wrong place at a wrong time no matter you are in Scarborough or the most sophisticated areas.
Cheers
Prince

One do not need to go door to door to search for jobs. Internet and phone is used to search one. except the labor jobs, A candidate is called for in-person interview only after 1-2 level of telephonic interactions and that does not happen often. So first target should be to secure connectivity. It may happen that get a job offer for a location in Alberta or BC.
Still, for many other reasons. I agree renting an apartment near public transit (prefer ttc) should be the way to go. Avoid investing in Car for first few months, specially without job the insurance amount will pinch you which will be high without driving history in Canada, but for sure apply for the license on second day of landing.
I have been living in scarborough for the last 8 years and enjoying my stay here. As a newcomer, we found the utility of TTC(Transit) when doing job search...whether it was travel to downtown or other areas in Toronto. While I cannot lay claim to be a newcomer anymore, when it came time to buying a home and settling down, we chose Scarborough over other areas in GTA.
Tk's comments are best ignored as he seems to living in the past and far away from present day canada.
