We recently hired a car from Enterprise car rental in USA. We hired car on Saturday and dropped it back on Sunday. Since the branch was closed, we dropped the key and came back. Today we received a call saying that there is a dent and a big scratch on rear wheel and it will cost us 1200 dollars US. When we left the car, there was no such thing but the terms of contract reads that in case car is dropped off, WE are responsible till the branch opens. Car was dropped off in their parking lot and we are not aware what happened overnight. We asked for picture and he said that it would be mailed by workshop after a couple of days.

I made internet search and found that Enterprise car rental is known for such rip off. There are thousands of complaints but big company can fight in court and we cannot.

http://www.ripoffreport.com/directory/enterprise-rent-a-car.aspx

Also see responses below each rip off report and you will be convinced that there are thousands of customers who have been ripped off.

My credit card was pre charged for $300.

I contacted a lawyer friend. He told me that what Enterprise does is that they will file a suit against you in US court. Since the company knows that we are from Canada, we cannot fight in USA without incurring a very large expense. If we do not fight, they will obtain ex parte decree and garnish our wages and recover. This is a common tactic.

My purpose of this post is two fold.

To make my other friends on CD aware about the scam of Enterprise car rental

and Second purpose is to obtain a feedback if someone can help me to minimize my loss.

I would appreciate any help here.

Not sure if you noticed on your link, but there is someone from Enterprise Social Media that is responding to the complaints - you should probably start by posting your issue here. If this does not help and if this is truly a ripoff orchestrated by a franchise owner, I would strongly suggest you report ALL the facts in a concise email to Enterprise corporate. The corporate office would take complaints like this very seriously (I would copy the a couple VPs if you can obtain or guess their email addresses based on their names). The bad publicity is a huge deterrent given that the brand is everything.

Good luck!

Did you get a loss damage waiver when you rented the car? If you did not then it is your mistake for not doing so and secondly returning the car without an attendant. If you did get the insurance then point the store to the insurance and ask them to claim from them. You dont need to pay anything.

Loss damage waiver costs $15 per day. Its usually covered by major credit cards with travel benefits. You can also buy one from third parties like Travel Guard for less than $10 per day. This says you the headache and so called "scams". People think twice before making such claims to insurance companies.

In addition, since this is travel insurance this does not impact your regular insurance deductibles.

Ignorance is not bliss.

Thanks to Bluelobster and others who have responded.

Just to provide update. The HQ of rental agency is not helpful and direct us to the branch which has charged us.

We talked to them and they promised to look into our grievance. They assured that they will get back to us. Today I found that they have charged us $900 on our credit card. We made a payment on our card, which allowed them to take out the money. They never informed us. Interesting part is that we had agreed to “block” $300. We had apprehension about Enterprise Car rental after reading about the scam. We had expressed out apprehension to the credit card provider. We were told that “since we provided credit card details voluntarily to Enterprise Car rental, they can put whatever charge they wish within the limit” They said that unless we prove that credit card details were not given voluntarily, they cannot help. On enquiry with a local lawyer friend, he told that Enterprise Car rental would love if we claim that credit card details were not provided voluntarily. Then Enterprise would have a reason to file a criminal case against us in USA court!. Anyway, this has made us aware about the danger of using credit card. The credit card provider told us that we can “dispute” the charges but there is no guarantee that excess charge will be refunded, especially if Enterprise Car Rental submits the documents supporting repair charges and “contract” of car rental which says that we are liable for damage. Enterprise Car rental has screwed us. They have perfected the scam. It is a big organization which has battery of lawyers, “invaluable experience” of dealing with disgruntled customers. I think it is pointless to argue with them.

BL has suggested to write on Rip Off report. I was advised against writing specific details as, in opinion of my lawyer friend, the guy monitoring such post would try to find some excuse to file a suit in USA.

I admit that we did not take additional insurance from Enterprise car rental to save a few bucks and have ended up paying huge cost. I am writing this to keep other readers updated about the developments so I might get some advise/feedback and others also become aware about potential issues.
