Desis who are settled here , having come several/many years ago, tend to ignore/brush off the newcomers, I feel...Not only in Canada and in USA also. I have felt bad, when Desi's did not return my smile,or if a small talk is initiated, giving reply in one word so as discouraging further conversations, etc. The only place they prove that everyone , basically a Desi, is at the temple. At at the time of Preeti Bhoj, you see stylish Desis trying to cut lines, pushing people around, everyone filling two plates so as to take home, etc etc. Am I wrong?

I am sure I'll get flamed for this...

"Anti-Desi" - I am starting to become your fan :)
Your comments sound harsh, but I share your views.

Now, to the "Skeptical" person...personally, I don't care what degree you have, I have acquaintances of varying demographics and we all seem to get along just fine. So, don't worry too much and stay confident. You'll do good. And I am sure there are plenty of people who don't care what education you have as much as who and what you are.

Don't worry about being flamed. You have a right to your opinion. The fact that you feel as though expressing an idea that renounces negative, bias attitudes in the community speaks volumes about some of the regulars here. Anyone who thinks they can defend negative attitudes associated with race, "caste", education, or any form of discrimination, can step in the ring - but it isn't tolerated in mainstream society here.

I don't think really desis care what education & degree you hold as after coming here you need a desi friend & family, so in my opinion noone will ignore or isolate you.

Dear Skeptical:

Don't think much about the stuff lke this, in every community you'll have this kind of people who may or may not ignore others only by the level of education, so many things else, you are Indian, you know it.

But you have the right to ignore as well if you do feel the same way. But at this time I can say Canada is a place where dignity of labor is highly appreciated and you can always upgrade yourself if you think you are left behind.

Keep your heads up on the shoulder and come over here with your aim focused. If any desi guide you negatively just ignore them and even try to befriendly with other communities as well, I find they have different perception about life in Canada, and quite helpful too! If you are coming to Canada, don't make only desis as your choice to flock together, you have had enough there in India. Try differently sometimes ;)

No you are not...:) I am not a temple goer and the rare time I end up there, yes, I have witnessed that...oh well...

As far as interacting with others (anybody for that matter), I tend to limit to a nice Hi and a "diplomatic" smile. I am extremely wary of people (particularly desis) trying to strike a conversation just out of nowhere as I have been mauled by Amway a**holes before...OR...the conversation seems to begin with "hi, where do you live?". I don't care if it's a desi or not, but, as long as the person is a stranger, I do not reveal where I live. I have found myself needing more time (I mean a good bit of time) to establish a relationship through simple generic conversations before trusting the person enough to discuss private matters. I am a fanatic of privacy.

So, maybe you may have come across such people. I am sure it might sound offensive....

I fully agree with New guy. Being more or less eduacted does not mean anything when it comes to showing respect to your peers. There are all sorts of people. Some highly educated, down to earth and some you know what?

And then if you are a nice person you end up meeting nice people, most of the times, that's my opinion.

Why just in Canada? People with better education often do consider themselves to be superior at least from an education standpoint from someone who is not... Can you blame them for it?
