My mother landed in Canada last month as PR.
While filing taxes do we file it together (currently my, my wife and my daughter's information go in together although there are separate returns)

Can i get some sort of tax credit by shopwing her as dependant as she dosent work

Can she get some refund as she does not have a income. Thanks

You will get some credit on your return. I don't think she will get a refund as refund is based on income.

Not sure if she will start getting the GST / HST credit. Perhaps some other tax professionals can help.

Refund cannot be created as Canada for the most part has only non-refundable tax credits. In other words, you can use tax credits until tax payable goes down to zero. Cannot go below zero (which indicates a refund).

Can't comment on GST/HST credit. You may want to see if others may have an opinion on that.

You may send her tax returns along with yours as you are all part of the family. You'll have to read up on the CRA requirements to see how you can claim her as your dependant.

Chittesh,
In Canada, every one is considered independent except for spouses.
Since she is a PR of canada, she is an independent family and please do treat her that way for tax refund. She will get more money. She should mention about her husband too for max. refund.
When she says that she earned $ 0 world wide income last year, then she will be eligible for HST credit which can run to $ 600 + for each quarter. She will have no relavance to your and your spouse income.
Hope this helps.

Peace by Murali

1. Show your mom as a dependent on your tax return. That you you will get the benefit of supporting her.
2. You mom still needs to file a separate tax return
3. For July 2013 to Jun 2014, max. GST / HST is $66 / quarter
4. Your mom may be eligible for Ontario Trillium Benefit of around $278 / year. This benefit will be paid on a monthly basis
5. Fill in the GST form RC151 (http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/gf/rc151/rc151-13e.pdf) immediately and mail it. Mom should start getting GST right away.
