The posts above were really spot-on with some of the benefits you can get for your mother. I just want to highlight another one, specifically, the caregiver amount tax credit.
Satisfying some conditions, you, on your personal tax return, can get this credit by virtue of providing care for your mother. Generally, the total benefit you can get for yourself can reduce taxes by up to $2,900 - which is quite a lot.
Some of the conditions are:
- mother must have lived with you
- mother must be a resident of Canada, for tax purposes
- must have been born in 1947 or earlier (so age 66 or above)
- must have a net income of less than $19,435
