Dear all,
Is there anybody living in St.John's NF? My husband has got a job offer from St.John's. But we are in a dilemma whether to accept the offer, since what we heard about the place is not +ive. If anybody knows about the place, please clarify the following doubts.
1. Is the place very remote? How do you travel to mainland? Is it expensive to travel to mainland?
2. Are all commodities(Indian groceries etc.) available there?
3. How are the schools? My son is going to grade 9 now.
4. Approximately how big is the Indian community?
5. Any Tamilians there? We are from Madras.
6. Do you feel lonely in that place?

I am living in Toronto and do not have much information about St.Johns.

I don't think there is much Indian community there. Usually when I have to find out the strenght of Indian community what I do is go to online people finder (like 411 services) and type in common last names from India. This is the URL for Canada

http://www.canada411.ca/eng/person.html

What I did is search on "Singh", "Patel" and "Shah". The total was only 16! It seems that there is no big community there. Since you are from South, I tried Swami and Rao and could get only one result!

1. Is the place very remote? How do you travel to mainland? Is it expensive to travel to mainland?

Everything is Remote in North America - distances are great and I bet most of the people in this forum might not have seen more than one provice.

I think the distance between St. Johns and Toronto is about 3000 Kms. You can check that at http://maps.yahoo.ca . But don't consider St. Johns as remote place so you can not get anything - all bigger cities are developed enough that you will get all stuff you need. You might have problem getting Indian groceries, But there should be atleast one Indian Grocery store.

2. Are all commodities(Indian groceries etc.) available there?
Not sure. On CanadianDesi we don't have anything listed so chances of getting Indian grocery should be difficult.

3. How are the schools? My son is going to grade 9 now.
School system through out Canada is very good and uniform. He should not have any problem.

4. Approximately how big is the Indian community?
Please see my above anwer. You can call any person after searching from St. Johns and they should be able to tell you for information.

5. Any Tamilians there? We are from Madras.
In toronto we have singnificant Tamil population from Sri Lanka. No Idea about St. Johns.

6. Do you feel lonely in that place?
I hope we have member from that place and anwer. For gents it is relatively easy to merge with society but ladies, especially when they are at home are feeling lonely for first 6 months -then everything settles down!

Hello,
I used to live in St.John's 2 years back... and it didn't have many indians that time ... there were so few indians there that they all knew each other but now there are sooo many new people that no one knows anyone :D ... and as for the high school for your son, high school students here can be really discriminating, i've experienced it 1st hand in my own school ...

St. Johns is a beautiful, small city. You should be aware though that traveling anywhere from St.Johns (within Canada or outside)can be quite expensive in terms of airfares etc. Also Indian groceries etc. are hard to get and quite expensive..
