Hasni,
Principal will help.
2 km is no big deal (unless it is more than 2 km). Your son has pleasent/ Bearable climate till Nov.. After that he will get ideas from his friends.

Another option is to walk 1/2 the distance and take public transit.

Murali Krishna.

However, you should also know that you can walk to the school office and ask the principal for options. canadian schools are bound to offer you options.
Other options is contacting your MLA / city counsellor.

Thanks for the tip TK. I also have similar issues, and will be contacting the school principal and the councillor for my ward. Never thought of that ;)

I beg your pardon, but I don't know if such a matter requires the attention of the principal or local MP.

I remember walking such a distance each day for one full academic year - when my kid was 8 yrs old and a ten month old baby in the pram. We were new to the country and had no car.

Now, I see kids walking such distances each day. Kids adapt fast. The weather does not affect them as much as it does us. It will also make them comfortable with the conditions.

Are we too demanding??? I feel that we must approach the authorities when there is a real need. Is this frivolous? I may be wrong here - but this seems to be my opinion here. We are talking about a 14yr old here.

Geeta,
Just a FYI. Canada has 3 levels of Govt., Federal (MP), Provincial (MPP or MLA) and Municipal (counsellor).
Schools fall under the jurdiction of the MPP (and not MP) and the city councellors.
Just visit them. They will help you.
Just because you did not seek their services does not mean that they should not be disturbed. We have the right to seek their help (which they are mandated to do for us) as we have spent a lot to come to their country and help them out by settling here. We pay taxes, we are required to being settlement money, we rent/ buy houses, we buy provisions, we use their pharmacy (by paying for it), we work for them ( through the country) etc..

Peace by Murali Krishna

SS,
Was that a real compliment or a tounge and cheek answer, now that I have removed you as a friend from FB?

What makes you think it's a tongue and cheek answer !!!

BTW, I met the school principal yesterday, I do know her well, since I'm the Chair of the School Advisory Council, and she gave me an honest response.

The Principal mentioned there are other instances where she's been approached with the same request. Unfortunately the tax $ goes towards the school system and transportation for Elementary students, based on the distance restrictions. The school does not get additional funding to provide for transportation for middle or secondary school students. Secondly, there's no way to confirm if a parents request is genuine (i.e. they don't drive), or it's for the convenience of the parents.

My child's school is a 3-in-1, gifted + French immersion + regular. The gifted and French immersion students get bus tickets, depending on where they live, 'cause this is their home school and they don't have one in their neighbourhood.

Next Step: Contact the city councillor. Now that may be challenging, 'cause my councillor is the Deputy Mayor of Toronto and it quite busy these days. BTW, I do know him personally too.
