Hi Portia,
I can't express my thanks in the words, you have provided me very insightful information. Thanks a tonne for the time spent, I really appreciate it.
I'm asking questions and doing research because most of the time I'll be alone with kids, and hubby wants to make sure we are fine in his absence. I'll go for high park now, the rent being expensive is no problem, my hubby's co. covers that for first 6 months.
If you don't mind suggest me a good suburb also, an suburb for a young family, our twins are 7yrs old. I want a balance of Indian-Canadian families in the surround. We were thinking of Whitby but can't know till we see the area ourselves.
Thanks a lot!!
Jona
In case you plan to stay in a white dominated neighborhood , please keep in mind the following neighborhood as well .... Royal York - Kingsway .. I do understand that the schools here are good as well , plus there are rental properties available namely Royal York Gardens and 12 Bexhill Court .. All the best .

I'll leave others to recommend specific suburbs because I've never lived in any. I will say I think living in a mostly white city neighbourhood and a mostly white suburb would be quite different experiences. (I should mention I am white myself, I came to this site through a google search once and I come back because my on-call job leaves me with a lot of time to spend online and I find the discussions here interesting and respectful. I know a lot about Toronto neighbourhoods but can't claim to know what would be best for Desis specifically, my experiences as a born Canadian of European heritage will be different).
High Park is mostly white but there are Indians and other Asians. I think Whitby is very white but its a different demographic - I don't mean just socioeconomic class. People in the city are less isolated and interact more with people from diverse backgrounds, while there is a lot of variance they also have a higher average level of education and overall more liberal views. Some will still be ignorant of other cultures but its less common and less socially acceptable to be ignorant and/or racist (or for that matter homophobic or otherwise discriminatory). I think people in some suburbs are quite isolated from people from other groups. I could be completely wrong - as I said I've never lived in the suburbs and people in the city are fairly prejudiced against people in the suburbs (eg. blaming them for traffic in the city, for voting in the current mayor, etc.). Certainly some suburbs are very diverse. My boyfriend is from Markham and its about 50 percent Asian (mostly Chinese) and seems like a fine place to live. I'm sure once you're in the city you'll get to see the suburbs for yourself and can decide what has the right feel for you.

My prayer to you
Is that you do all the things you set out to do
And live your life the way you love

Thanks Portia,
This is really some good information you have provided! As an expat we have also been exposed to a lot of cultures and have friends from all countries. The country where I currently live, we have created a social group balance with Indians and non indians. I want to create something similar in Canada.
I personally also feel that choosing a correct suburb will take us some time, that's the reason we wait and look the first 6 months and then finalize something.
I'm happy to hear that even being a non Indian you contribute a lot to the board, I think the idea of the site is to generate help/information from all and for all. Keep up your good work, many like me are listening and get helped!
Take care..........Jona
