PAN Card is a photo identity proof but not an address proof.
To open a bank account or to buy property, you will need an address proof.
May be some of you still have licence (which is valid for 10 / 20 years). renew it and keep the address current.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong.
While it is acceptable in some cases, it is not true.
The sole address proof required is :
1. 10th or 12 std mark sheet (Some states give this. It is not there in mine from TN).
2. Driving license, Aaadhar card and passport.
Once you get one, the others is very easy.
On a side note Aadhar card address may accept rent agreement on a stamp paper but the above mentioned is only the true address proof.

Agree, but one Rent Agreement can lead to another, & then you can all the bunch of address proof you are looking for..

Rent agreement (I assume) can be used only to get Aadhar card. Otherwise it is useless.
For driving license, they will not accept rent agreement as well as to get Ration card.
In the locality that I live, they agreed for rent agreement as proof of address for Gas but refused to accept it elsewhere.
In Trichy, TN, one of my friend (a US citizen) could not get his Aadhar card as they told him to get a certificate from Councellor and he still is not able to get that as they are making him run around.

You will be asked to give a street address and a number, where you live in each application. Currently they want you to prove and in some cases it is mandatory. So, if you receive a Bank statement, any utility bills for that address in your name or your name appears on these bills, then they will consider it sufficient. This address proof is mandatory and is required, in establishing the door number and the street where you live in most cases. So, please see where it becomes necessary and where it is waived. You be the judge. But it is nice to have one handy, just in case!!.

I am surprised to note that to open a bank account your need all this? I opened two accounts with ICICI in Delhi last year - NRE and NRO, and all they needed was my Canadian passport and OCI. My address on the bank accounts is that of Canada. The person also took my wife's and my photo thru her cell phone and used that to open the account. All it took her was to get it certified by her senior and it was done!
And I did not even have to go to the branch - they came to my in-laws' house where I was putting up at that time.
