Hi lsunuwar

Just hang in there and you should be able to find a job pretty soon. The economy in BC is booming and most of the people I know have landed good decent jobs in the last couple of months including some in IT. Just hang in there and do all you can to network with people , consultants etc .

Could you also please post a update on the help you got from the professional resume writing agency hired. Was it useful to get a job.

(I refused to pay such a agency when I was looking for a job hence the question. So the industry is not new but I am surprised how they track new folks landing to canada. )

Hello RP

I went to HRDC funded agency for making resume. You don't
need to pay to these agencies but they ask your SIN so that they
charge government. I found that majority of unemployed people
in the agency I attended were those who have worked many years
in Canada. There were few people like me who are new immigrants.
You will qualify to get employment insurance once you workfor
certain number of hours.

If you are really good in consulting books and websites it is not
necessary to attend those agencies. In my case they didn't really
help because I got a job with a resume without corrections from
the agency people.

Many times I got confused when they ask many questions to improve
my resume. However, going these places, you can understand how
other people are doing. You can have free internet and printer.

Thank you Smiley for encouragement. I have already found a job
which is helpful to get Canadian experience in my field.

I would just like to add something in relation to the above post.
I also attened HRDC funded courses and as you have mentioned that there were many people who had already worked in Canada and few new ones. I also observed the same thing. Moreover the chopped my resume to 1&1/2 pages and I was not very impressed with that. Then I thought I am new in the country and maybe this is the way system works here. And eventually when I got the job, it was based on the resume that I had made before coming to Canada !!! Just a thought, does re-writting the resume help?? Any thoughts on this.....

HRDC funds a job club program for all new immigrants - free of cost. Do take advantage of this 4 week program. I did one at the following agency:
Landell and Associates
201 - 3665 Kingsway,
Vancouver, B.C. V5R 5W2 ....604 434-2644
http://www.landell.com/

They teach you how to re-write your resume, how to cold-call prospective employers and coach you for interviews too. At the same time, they give you tips about the new work culture.

Even while you're doing this job club program, you can attend interviews etc and if you get a job, stop attending it.
All the Best!
