One of my friends has permanently left Canada and has moved to India. He wants to renew his Drivers license which expired recently. He wants to renew it online but wants to give my address as he does not have an address here. He travels to US at least once a year on business visit and he says a canadian license is easy to rent a car etc..


Will it be ok for me to let him do this? Am I committing any crime?

It will be nice to remind your friend who is asking you for a favour, that having a Driver's Licence in Canada will generate ties to him and Canada and if he wants to or has already severed ALL of the links to Canada, he should perish the thoughts of holding onto to it. Alternately ask him to get the IDL and the link is provided for him under this.

If you are comfortable helping him, then respond in the affirmative. If he says that he will pay the forwarding fees for sending all the mail to him, once an year or so, it is your choice at that time, because you cannot forward it to where it is that he is currently living without additional postage/couriering.

Is it T.K. we are talking aboot. (In Nigerian accent) !!

Also keep in mind you may have to declare to your insurance company about your friend. My insurance wanted details of all adults who have a driving licence. You'd have to submit a form if you want them excluded from your insurance policy. At least that was my experience with my insurance company.

Tomorrow his OHIP card is going to come to that Addy. So OHIP fraud as he doesn't live here but has OHIP card and Free medical.

Then his CRA income tax return will come there. CRA might think you are renting that place to him and collecting rent and not declaring it.

He can easily claim different tax credits based on your Addy like HST credit, Child tax benefits, Ontario Trillium benefit . So CRA fraud.

He wants to have All the advantages of Canada without having the disadvantages of Canada like bad weather, no jobs, no culture, no social life, expensive houses, expensive car insurance and gas.

If he is your good friend nothing wrong helping him - That is called real Friendship.

BUT i don't think that he is your good friend. if that was the case you would have helped him without coming to CD's help.

So leave it man , its not worth taking risk if you don't trust your friend.
