Minimum wages is a new reality in Canada. Jobs are getting scarce. When I landed in 2002, some of my friends used to work in minimum wage job only. But remember that at that time, if one got a salary of Rs 5000 in India, in 2014, the salary for the same person is around Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakhs a month but in Canada, the min. wage would have changed by just 20 - 40%. Why I am saying is that at that time, they used send a significant part of their earnings to India to invest in Land.
However there is a golden rule. That is save as much as you can. Just because you are on min. wage does not mean that you can spend all.
Some tips are :
1. Enroll in multiple food banks around your area to get all your groceries free.
2. Ontario govt. has some subsidy on electric power for low wage earners.
3. Always research on the net to find free give aways.
4. Rent is something that you canot avoid. Try to get basements in predominatly white areas (Like Old Dundas Road in Islington)
5. Soup kitchen in Toronto (multiple locations) will get you a hot meal.
6. Meet your MP/MLA to find out what free stuff that their constituency will provide
7. Try to sell / max. use your hydro. If your rent is all inclusive, then use the heat from your oven to dry cloths, wash your stuff in the bath tub etc..
8. Never speal bad about Canada to anyone. Always praise Canada in front of your fellow desi's / whites but keep your target of saving as much money / exploit Canada in your mind alone.
9. Donot loan any money to get you any free help. Never give money to Desi's. They will never return it.
10. Always use TTC monthly pass.
11. Canada uses a system of employment through temp. agency so that they can fire you at will. Very hard to get a job without a reference or Canadian experience.
12. IKEA offers breakfast at very minimal charge. This will help you to stay positive in front of Desi's. Use it on weekends.
13. Never buy new stuff. There is always garage sale or even what people throw away can be reused. Just be careful not to bring bedbugs.
14. Always low ball an offer on Kijiji. Donot be afraid. YOu will get 1 in 20 of the bids you lowballed.
15. To earn extra income, take good stuff from the garbage, clean it and put it for sale in Kijiji. It is an additional income.
16. Try if your employer can pay under the table. This will increase social assistance from the govt..
17. Apply for everything that the govt . will offer you like HST credit/ CCTB/Universal life etc..
But when you do all this, always keep a positive frame of mind and try to upgrade your skills / knowledge and know Canadian jargon. You will survive.

Sorry to say, but what about going back to India or where you immigrated from, instead of spending the good part of your life in misery? Ask yourself - is it worth it?
"Since 2002 till date....did you really face all this....?"
No man no............!!
He did this for a few years and then got fed up and left Canada. Perhaps to become an adviser to other immigrants with his funny anecdotes and interesting solutions!!
