Can you live in Windsor and drive everyday to dearborn? I knew people who did that few years ago on daily basis. I don't know since 9/11 how much is this feasible. Check around in Dearborn and border areas. You may find some people who still do this or have more info. Check US imig. people and website.

i live in dearborn(near detroit,MI) and i guess windsor is just 15 miles from here and also a part of canada. i can definitely rent a house, get a canada driver license, pay utilities and also if possible try for some arranged employment for name sake but i guess crossing the border daily might become a problem to some extent. (let me know if you know of some sort of a permit which will help me in doing this daily)
i assume that just like US, canada never keeps a record/date of departure as a lot of people cross the border and hence i was just thinking how can it be possible to determine the exact duration of presence in canada. i am just trying to find out what are the different forms of proofs required for applying for citizenship.
would appreciate if you can let me know

Living in Windsor and driving across to DTW every day is not a big deal. I have been doing it for about 3 years. Since most people crossing the border at that time - about 6.30 to 7.30 am are folks heading to work, they don't ask too many questions and the crossing is done in about 30 sec to a minute.
Entering back into Canada is also trouble free since most people are returning home from work at that time. So far, no one has scanned my PR card, so I don't know what you guys are talking about. Even if they scan, I am not sure what info they can get since they don't have a baseline to compare and create a history.
However, the license plate gets photographed everytime you cross and it registers as a frequent traveller after frequent crossings in the same vehicle. I know this because, the officer explained to me once when she could not capture the plates on the camera as the plates were dirty.
Apparently, frequent crossings help since once I was stopped at the departure point of the US exit (Windsor tunnel), and the US customes agent ran my plates and I could hear someone in the walkie talkie saying "frequent traveller" and the customs agent let me go without any further questions.

valleyguy,
what dimple2001? has said is correct. Though I personally did not drive back and forth across the border on a daily basis, I know people who have.
I would like to say that if you do live in Windsor(I mean physically live) not just rent etc. and commute daily to Dearborn, it should not be a problem obtaining Canadian citizizenship(I would like to stress the 'should not be' part). Make sure that you do everything in Canada though, like groceries, etc. etc. the more proof you have of actually living in Canada the better...
